| Easy, Look at it, take it for a drive, or get it inspected by a mechanic. If its 15 yrs or older you need an inspection anyways, so you might as well get a mechanic to look at it. |

get a safety inspection... to be safe you just need steering and brakes basically..
things to check for brakes:
- not leaking any fluid
- brake pedal doesnt feel spongey (air in brake lines)
- rotors arent warped to hell (some warpage isn't too bad)
- brake pads have pad left
for steering:
- (if power steering) not leaking any fluid
- tie rods & ball joints in good shape
- no play in the steering wheel before the wheels turn
then theres the obvious things, like tires, and if the engine bay smells like gasoline (fuel leak) etc etc, signal lights etc |

Also look closely under the hood and at the bumper. Incase it's been in an accident and cheaply repaired. (pealing paint or clear coat, also parts that are painted that shouldn't be) Good sign of crappy repairs.
I also would look at the strut towers. If the car is old. |
