so whats the rule of having a third break light? i disconnected mine because a plastic piece that covers it broke off and every time i push on the brake it lights up my entire car...i'm just wondering how serious of a deal this is.

just like having a brake light out or headlight i assume, prolly get a ticket for it, I didn't have mine hooked up in my old car and i never had any problems though.

i dont think it should be a problem if u have the other 2 brake lights on the corners working (since thats what a majority of cars have anyways)

Sec 20(1) VER
"A brake lamp on a vehicle must light up when the service brake is applied."

In a nutshell, it is supposed to be functional.

If you refer to Section 3 of the Vehicle Equipment Regs you will notice that there are 3 systems that cannot be disabled. In subsection (c) you will notice that the centre brake light is included. The fine is $57 & there are no demerit points attached.

Try car-part.com.. or some local wreckers. Maybe you can find the cover piece for it. Maybe someone could fabricate one out of fiberglass as well.

Some base model cars don't come with a 3rd brake light, even though there is a mounting spot and the rear window defrost lines designed to flow around it. :dunno:

Really. Which ones. Since 1986 and new cars are required to have it.

My 86 prelude didnt, my 95 eclipse doesnt(does now with the LED bar in the spoiler). They both had spots for them, but no holes in the carpet and the lines on the rear windshield designed to go around it. Kind of odd, and I've been in other cars and noticed this as well but the makes/models don't come to mind, but its been few and rare.
