700R4 transmission for Chev Silverado - Click HERE for Original Thread

Maybe someone can enlighten me on the problem as I'm not the most familiar with autos. I was driving along on the highway 2 and took the exit towards Rocky Mountain House. As I'm accelerating back up to highway speed the transmission won't shift into fourth (overdrive). I slow down for a bit and try again and it shifts up into fourth finally.

A few minutes later I stop for a light near Sylvan Lake and the tranny won't shift up into fourth again. So I stop at a town up the road and check the fluid and it's topped up and clean, no burnt smell. I continue on and the transmission shifts fine. 100 or so km up the road it does it again. I continue driving up this road for 30km and then have to stop because I missed my turn. As I come to a stop there is a grinding and clunking coming from the transmission, kind of like trying to shove a manual tranny into gear when the gears aren't synchronized. At this point I lost second, fourth and reverse in the transmission and it has been that way ever since.

I'm figuring it's a valve body problem, but I really am not too sure. If anyone has any insights it would be greatly appreciated.

Haha, fucking hilarious. This vehicle has 320,000km on it and this is the first serious thing to ever go wrong with it.

Anyone with actual responses?:dunno:

Sorry to hear about the transmission problem that you are having. Based on the description that you are giving of your transmission problem, there is really only one cause that I can think of, which is a cracked Sun shell on your planetary gearset in the transmission.

This will cause your truck to only have first and third gear available, no second, fourth or reverse gear. Because of the failed gear, the second, fourth and reverse gear configurations can't be engaged.

Not sure what year your truck is, but if it is a '96 or newer, the truck will probably be equipped with the 4L60E transmission (basically a computer controlled 700R4).

If you are showing a Check Engine Light, and you get it checked you will probably find a code for a failed 1-2 shift solenoid - if so, the solenoid is probably fine, its the gear that is missing.

In any event you are going to need to rebuild or replace your transmission. A GM dealer will probably quote you in the neighbourhood of $4000, but invest some time calling around to various transmission shops and you will probably be able to get it done for $1500-$2000 (installed), maybe less if your truck is 2WD. Also, try not to do any driving if at all possible, as the chunks of gear may hurt your transmission core.

Good luck!

Talk to Pro Tech - they do a great job with transmissions and will most likely have one on the shelf they can sell you.

I recommend Clutch and Grab transmission.

great guys and have a couple 4l60E's there. Plus tons of others.

The transmission charge pump may have cav'd out on you, i suggest pulling off the pan and checking the filter for any sign of excessive metal shavings.

But by the sounds of it like of it like jb's said its probably your plantery is out to lunch, but start with the basics and then take it in.

Thanks for the help guys. The truck is an '89 4x4 regular cab so it should just be the standard 700R4 as far as I know.

I'm guessing that the planetary gears don't come in a standard rebuild kit huh? My buddy was going to give me a hand doing a rebuild, but usually the kits only have clutches and seals, no gears.

Thanks again! If there's anything else I should know I'd appreciate it.

buysell came up with this page, a few ads mention 700r4's specifically.
