Anyone here know how to fix laptops? - Click HERE for Original Thread

I've personally never cracked one open. I can build desktop computers with very little or no trouble. But I've never tried to troubleshoot a laptop. My lap had its harddrive fail twice now and was replaced under warranty and the screen was also replaced after failing. I've brought it into best buy several times for warranty work and they fixed everything except for one bug. The laptop begins to make a loud screeching sound near the back end by the fan. Only thing is the fan isn't on :dunno:

Note: I don't want to mess around with it and kill it cause I need it for school and can't afford to get another one

what kind of laptop? most of them aren't too difficult to take apart and fix things. and if your fan isn't spinning then it probably needs to be replaced

Qoo
it could be something that stuck onto the fan so it won't move.
there are usually 2 fans in a laptop.

as the Tech in best buy and A-comp.
I can tell you they won't fix it in shop.
send it back via warrenty.
it should end up in nexicore

I've done them before.

Search the web - laptops usually have documentation made available that show you how to do common tasks, like replace keyboards, etc.... Typically it will also show you how to take the whole thing apart as well.

^^^ dont expect to keep your warrenty after that!, just keep taking it back to them, after like 3 time they are supposted to give you a new unit if its brought back with the same problem.

Qoo
actually, the 4th time in for major repairs (excluding virus)
the lemon policy will cover it and they give you new one.

Major repairs, something that a BB/FS in store tech cannot fix.

its the X1000 compaq. 1.3 or 1.4ghz cant remember Intel centrino, 512 ram, 60gb hd some ati graphics card and i don't know what mobo it has. my warranty just expired as of sept 30 so I'm screwed. The fan does work though when the computer gets hot but even when the computer is cool its pretty annoying I can't even study in the library now thanks to this thing making so much noise

how many screws can you have leftover from reassembly and still have a running laptop computer? 10 percent! trust me on this one.
Oh, and there's probably a wire that is sitting too close to the fan from all the times it's been disassembled.
