| I just bought an Integra Type R last summer and i am wanting to get into auto-x with it and would really like to get it out to the road course in Calgary this summer. Where can i find out some info on auto-xing in edmonton and area and where can i find out about how to get my car on the road course in Calgary?( It's at Race City, right?) I'm curious if they have open track time there or if you need to be a member of a club and the club books time or what. Also what do i need in the order of equipment? Just a helmet? |

Edmonton autocross organizations...

As for road racing, I think clubs such as the Calgary Sports Car Club or beyond.ca (and others) book the track for lapping events, so you'd have to get in touch with them.

The CSCC also holds a performance driving school each spring. I think this year's is on April 26, 27. Costs around $400, although it may be full already.

Try emailing Race City (TheTrack@RaceCity.com) or one of the organizers... Gary Leadbetter (homesold@shaw.ca) or Rick Coutts (couttsr@cadvision.com).
The BMW club in Calgary holds a similar course, but I have never found any sign up information for it on the 'net.
HTH.
[EDIT: Found the Race City link] |

| Hey thanks a bunch heavyfoot. Yah i'd definately be interested in the performance driving school, i'm going to look into it. It would be nice if it was offered more than just once in the spring though. I'm hoping they're running it at another time in the summer too. |

No problem.
AFAIK, the CSCC Road Race school is only held once, but like I said there is also the BMW club school (July???), and I think there is another commercially run one called the Proformance School held in August maybe.
Also, if you are getting into AutoX, the local clubs don't hold any schools, but the CSCC usually has a cheap rookie school at the beginning of the season, plus they are bringing in the Evolution Autocroos school again this year (around the end of June). The Evo school is around $300 per day and is devoted strictly to Autocross. Pricey, but I figure I dropped about 5 seconds off of my times thanx to that school.

| Yah, i found a link to the evolution school, sounds pretty good. Also, i e-mailed about the performance driving course with the CSCC and was told there are 22 out of 40 spots left. Now i gotta decide which school i want to take, probably something later in the year, April could be a little early as my car has been in storage all winter and i'm not sure i want to beat on it right after i take it out of storage. Yah , there's also the BMW club schools , but you have to become a member of their club first, not sure what that costs. |

From a pure fun/adrenalin pespective, the road racing schools probably offer a little more bang for the buck. If your priority is to be competitive at autocrosses, then Evolution is the way to go.
I don't know the exact price of the BMW school, but I think with membership, it worked out to about the same as the CSCC one. |

| Do you have any idea how similar the CSCC and BMW club courses are? I'm curious because the timimg of the BMW club's course is better for me. I forgot to ask when i e-mailed, you said it cost $400 right?(the CSCC course) |

Having not taken the BMW course, I can't say for sure. There were a couple of posts about the courses on the ASA Yahoo group a couple of months ago. Maybe check that out as someone who had attended the BMW school chimed in. It sounded like the student/instructor ratio is a little better on the CSCC course. When I went, it was almost 1:1, however I think the BMW course may be closer to 2:1. AFAIK, the instructors all come from the same general pool.... WCMA and BMW club road racers.
And yes, the CSCC course is about $400 + GST. |

Pat,
There hasn't been any word on the BMW schools yet. I've emailed the Edmonton Southern AB BMW club contact twice, and haven't gotten a response back yet.
Jesse Runge was the guy on ASA board who said he attended the school. I think this is going to be the only school i'm attending this summer. Don't know if i can afford the EVO schools again.
Chris. |
