Hey boys.
I know this had been discussed before. It seems that everyone has their own opinions about DSM shops around Edmonton.
Some say Apex, some say Zippy's and a lot more too.
What I need is for you guys to lay it straight and just let me know the shops in Edmonton that have done work on your cars, and dont charge an arm and a leg.
I think I have a hole in one of my pistons in my 4G63. I need it completely looked over, and possibly rebuilt. I want my motor rebuilt perfectly.
I need to know in the next couple of days.
Thanks boys and girls

| Resource Auto is another shop that people have posted in the past that deal with a lot of DSMs. |

Just like anything else, I think you're going to find a variance of opinion.
Personally, every one of our cars goes to Zippy's. The most recent was the talon which was the recipient of a 2.4L stroker. A factory defect water pump scuffed the pistons last time (the pump ate through itself, hardly Zippy's fault) but after re-doing the pistons the motor is solid. I beat on it as much as I could and it never skipped a beat. Andrew is the main man at Zippy's, talk to him. He's mostly reasonable but, just like any other person, he's got his off days. My only complaint with Zippy's isn't the quality of work but the speed at which things get done (the name is deceptive) but hey, you can't have your cake and eat it too. I'd rather things took longer and were done properly.
I don't know anything about Resource so I can't comment on them. I don't really know much about Apex either from a non-dyno point of view but they did make a fast neon so they probably know what they're doing. |

| But doesn't Zippy's charge an arm and a leg? |

Doesnt matter where you go, you get what you pay for.
If you just want to cheap out, don't expect quality. |

Yeah, yeah, he's gonna sue me, whatever. I wonder if it's considered good business practice to tell people to go kill themselves? Or if that's just how Zippys runs. |

I think it would be fair if you were to expand on that statement. |

Everything was expanded on NACDSM and look what happened over there. But if Phill wants to tell the whole story I will let him post. |

I don't think so, I can only show him as much respect as he showed me, so I'm happy just talking trash. |

What are you, 2 years old? Do whatever you want obviously but you sure aren't showing any capacity to try to be 'the better man'. In my humble opinion, it's a bit childish to continuously mumble and groan about a personal issue you had with someone, regardless of the circumstances. I'm not taking sides on the issue you have (I really don't know enough about it) but (in my humble opinion, again) this type of behavior seems infantile. Just my 2 cents, take it or leave it. |

Well, I hope I can post this,as I should address this issue of killing ones self. My thought at the time was that if a person did such poor work on a car that it was dangerous, that it would be better that they were the victims of their own work. Unfortunately,I phrased it rather poorly, and didn't correct the situation.I apologise publicly to you Phill.
Please cease working on cars before you do kill someone.
And DON'T kill yourself on my account,I might feel a tinge of guilt.
Cars are supposed to be FUN! Working on them is fun too,but we do need to be responsible about it,and learn to do it right. DSM guys are usually my most car-aware customers, and I appreciate that, because they understand what I tell them about their cars.Keep learning and have fun! |

| Yeah Phill's car was nothing but a death trap. What work on Phill's car was so poor that is work kill him? Maybe you should learn how to give a full/real inspection, not just one to try and thicken your wallet. :asshole: |

Well this is just my humble opinion of Andrew and his business:
6:00 comes around the guys tired, wants to go home. Understandable...yet he still gave me the time of day to explain some pointers about my 94 tsi. I have to get the motor rebuilt most likely, and although its not done yet, I am going to Zippy's to get it done.
Why? Because I knew the guy was knowledgeable about DSM's the minute I pulled up. The guy did give me the time of day. He didnt try to screw me over by telling me I had to put in a whole wack of extra stuff on my rebuild.
I know his shop rate is a little higher, but hey, sometimes its worth it in the end, when you get work done by a guy who shares his honest opinion instead of lying to you or screwing you around.
I guess my opinion of the guys shop is yet to be fully determined, as my car still has to be fixed by them. I will know later. As for now, this is where I stand on the issue.

I was there at the time, and I agree totally. Andrew took his time to explain everything and answer all of 94greentsi's questions. We didn't get out of there until almost 7:00pm. Try that with other shops in the city.
Andrew was very honest with us, and when I asked him his opinion on other shops, refused to bash anybody else's work. Andrew also quotes a job price, not just an hourly rate, chances are he's not making 85 bucks an hour off everyone. Either way, you get what you pay for, if you want a cheap job, it'll look and run like a cheap job.
Besides, it's also comforting to know that he cares about his work, alot of mechanics don't. Just gives you that extra peace of mind. |
