Photo radar while moving??? - Click HERE for Original Thread

stylinmike
Okay, the other day I was driving....and ill admit...i was definetely speeding. Anyway, I passed a photo radar van (actually it was a jimmy) and he was driving as well but in the other lane. Well just as I passed him he flashed me. This was in St. Albert by the way. Do the photo radar vans have the ability now to radar you while they are moving? Ive heard rumors of some places having this, but I didn't think Edmonton and surrounding areas were at that point yet? Any insight?

i never knew they could flash you. i bet if you get the ticket you could get out of it pretty easily. theres a lot of variables to account for to take a moving picture. i have been going 10-20km/h over the limit and pased a van before, and no flash.

The only way you could get out of a photo radar ticket with the defense of "the van was moving" is to provide doubt that it would be accurate.

Your average person does not have enough knowledge to even come close to raising a doubt - obviously if the ticket was given, the photo radar company is willing to stand behind it and can prove it's valid (in their minds).

For the love of God, don't speed in St. Albert... there's always photoradar there on the Trail... I see it everyday since I live up there...

We got nice Mounties, but tons of photovans...

The photo radar would have to be rigged into the jimmy's speedo or take multile radar shots, at you and at a stationary target to account for the Jimmy's speed.

I've always wondered how highway cops do it.. cause what if their speeding?

They don't have the radar set to a speedo.

That type of radar use doppler shift to measure speed which basically sends out a radio wav to the ground as well as the target. There is a calculation between the signal response to the radar unit, on both dopplers, which gives the target speed while taking the speed of the vehicle equipped with the radar into consideration.

Photo radar does not, can not, and will not work with the photo vehicle in motion. The operator may be able to test the slave-flash on the bumper, but that's all.
