hey i drive a 88 turbo 5speed.. and everytime i get on and off the gas i notice there is alot of play in the drive line. my first gear whines like a bitch too but it sounds kinda cool. now the quesiton is what should i do? try to find a old tranny and diff or get clearances and stuff readjsuted in the tranny or diff.. or maybe even rebuild it if i have to? what shoudl i do and woudl you guys knwo how much it is for the rabuild? thanks

Supra_devil
thats ussually caused by backlash in the diff, it could probably be taked to a shop and be shimmed to get the proper lash. won't be cheap though, unless you can take it out yourself to take it in.

easy way to check is to jack up the rear end, put it in neutral. then turn the drive shaft by hand while holding one of the axles.

if it feels like a fair bit of slack then thats your issue.

how bout that first gear whine? is that normal? i thoguht it was normal b4 maybe it had kinda straight cut gears or soemthin..b ut then i was driving beside another supra and that car had no whine

Supra_devil
well if first is bad too, that could be from the tranny, although these cars are known for some noise they don't normally break unless its higher power. I would change the gear oil to redline or to GM synchromesh first, and then go from there if its still noisy.

azntunedbysti
well as long as nothign is going to shatter and float around in the tranny it should be good.. besides.. the whining soudns awesome in the parkade. i was jsut afraid it might be some bearings or somethin

azntunedbysti
ic an run gm synchromesh? isnt that liek atf? dont i have to use thick gear oil?

Supra_devil
syncromesh is MTF. manual transmission oil. i use 75-90 redline iirc, should be the same for your car.

azntunedbysti
hmm okay i think i shoudl switch to the synchro mesh then i heard ppl say that stuff works miracles

I would change the oil in your diff at the same time. It is only a little more oil and it will save your diff....most people do not know to change the diff oil every once in awhile.

If it does turn out to be a cooked diff...I just happen to have a spare that I could sell to a club member (hint www.supraclub.ca ) cheap. Fresh seals & oil this spring then I got a N/A diff to put in.

Let us know what it turns out to be...if you need a second opinion post up a time when you can meet up and we can look at it...we have broken & fixed just about everything on the cars, we can help.

i'll go get it checked out when i have time.. friggin ahve no tiem to take it in so far. busy with shcool everyday and even when i do have a day off i gotta take my accord in like eveyr 2 weeks for warranty work.. but yeah diff fluid should be new.. changed it wiht trans f;uid about a year ago.. i was thinkin of runni n that redline heavy shock proof stuff.. but woudl it be too thick for winter use?
