The new season of 5th gear is underway, with new sets, bigger budgets, and a full hours worth of vehicular madness... Notably the new Lotus Exige 240R <woo, woo>
Now, I think everyone knows or realises that I'm a bigger Top Gear fan than I am than of 5th Gear, but I do enjoy both shows and they both deliver test drives witty and entertaining <ahem> vickybutlerhendersonishotchahotcha<cough><cough>
Rant on <click>
This first eposide of 5th Gear however, there was a comment made that made me think, now why would the producers allow or even want something like that?.
The comment made by Tiff Needle was this:
"We like this track zabrazabrazabra (can't understand what they are saying) because it's full of tight twisty bends with little room for error and it really rewards a good handling car <scrunches face> unlike some airfeild circuits I ~could~ mention <cut to Vicky and another co-host doing the ooOOOooo face>"
I've always seen 5th Gear as the more mature and classy show, but this really turned me off a bit. Why take a blatant cheap shot at the other guys when it's not even necessary?.
Stupid I think.
Rant off <click>
Can't wait for Top Gear to start up again. |

| Jeremy Clarkson is always taking shots at 5th gear so why not return the favor.Either way they are both great shows |

I like both but am more of a fan of 5th Gear. I just found I generally get more out of the average episode, even at only 30 minutes, than I would with Top Gear.
Top Gear usually devoted an entire episode to only one or two topics (at least the episodes I was watching on BBC when it was on), and sometimes they weren't even that great of topics.
A whole episode on an SUV vs. a tank (or at least it felt like a whole episode)? :dunno:
Personally I find 5th Gear to be more enlightening and educational. How loose objects behave in the trunk of your car in various levels of collisions or what happens when two cars hit head on at 50mph is much more interesting and relevant to me than whether an SUV can race a tank or if one Top Gear host can drive to a destination in a SLR Maclaren in less time than the other host can use public transportation (flying, boats, etc) - although I'll admit that segment was kinda funny. |

Well, that's exactly it though, exactly. Top Gear is the immature, funny man schtick and 5th gear is the educational mans approach.
I guess I wasn't expecting to see 5th Gear lowering themselves to Top Gears level so soon :) |

i used to think of Fifth Gear vs Top Gear as the TV equivelent of Road and Track vs Car and Driver.
One is for the mechanically enclined... the other is for the enthusiats...
it's important to remember that Tiff used to star WITH Clarkeson on Top gear not too long ago, so obviously they know what they are doing when they make shots at one another.
really there is no loser if you watch either, or both. Just thank god you don't waste your time watching anything north america puts on the airways... Globals Driving TV come to mind... then leaves as puke at the thought of another half our of "this car is great, this car is fantastic, this other car is super, oh hey look theis is awesome, give us more sponsorship, we won't say anything bad!!! Hell we won't say anything usefull at ALL!" |

who says you can't burn it to DVD/CD and watch it on .... tv?
or if you have a nice enough TV, you can hook your computer right up to it...
i'm not gonna lie, we built a computer entirely for watching the TV shows we don't get on peasant vision... no commercials, TV quality (DVD quality if you get the right downloads) and comfy couch :) |

Meh i have a clearer screen on my computer and i do burn them. That being said i watched a 5th gear episode and hated how they had this office setup and i was getting background noise from people talkin. The girl proved the point that they need a better no biased driver when tossin down track times ( plus her voice was annoying ) and meh otherwise it was a decent show but theres little things i prefer with Top Gear .
One quick note, i did like how they showed and explained Heel-toe for the newbs and it was a good demostration so props to 5th gear there. |
