Hey all, just a couple questions.
Ireally need to do something about the intermittent electrical issues in my dash. I go over a pothole and my dash lights all go out for a second and the stereo shut down for a bit. Just driving over the crosswise tar repairs in the road is enough to make my clock on the idiotlight panel flicker. I suspect it's mostly just loose connections/cold solder joints but there's so much extra wire in there from various repairs, mods and stereo installs, I'm thinking it'll be easier to rip it all out from the fuse panel on and replace it. Besides, then I can add the push button start that I've always wanted. The actual work isn't an issue. I spent 2 years at NAIT learning to do it on aircraft, so I'm sure I can handle the dash on a car.
I have a week's holidays at the end of this month. If I count the weekends on either side, that gives me 9 days. I intend to go at it full time until it's done, so I fully expect I'll have enough time. If I'm way out, PLEASE! Let me know! I just want to hear from someone else who's done it to make sure.
I'm also wondering what the best diagram would be to go off of. I've got the Haynes Manual and the FSM. The Haynes manual doesn't seem to be all that complete, and the FSM doesn't have wire sizes. I COULD just do stuff one wire at a time, but it would be SO much neater and easier down the road if I could go system by system (Instument panel, Idiotlight panel, Center panel, Stereo).
Last thing I'm wondering is how much wire I'll need. The 7 is my only vehicle, so once I get the dash off and apart, I'll be stranded until I get it back together. I've got a bunch of wire labels and intend to use them everywhere I can, so I'm hoping I can get away with a single colour for each system with a couple others for common systems like ground, +12V, and hot while on. I was thinking about a 100ft roll of each colour and size, but if there's any system that does something like going to the rear of the car and then back again, I'd really like to know. 200ft. might be a good idea there...
Thanks in advance for any input. It will be much appreciated.

What site? You didn't post any link.
As for a harness from a parts car, I've been thinking about that, but I can't afford a whole car and I have no idea where to get one that I KNOW would be good. The last thing I want is to swap in a WORSE harness. I have the tools and ability to make one I know will be good, so why not? Of course, if anyone knows where I could get one, I"m not opposed to going that way.
I just thought - would an s5 harness fit my s4? |

| So many things flicker that it sounds like one or two bad power wires, not a whole bad harness. In fact, it sounds like one of the clip-on fittings, or the wiring to that fitting. I'd be way more tempted to rewire the +12 and ground lead fittings where they connect at all dash locations, than to do another harness, or replace whole wires. As a next step I'd replace fittings rather than the harness, unless it is too hard to get wires in and out of the harness. |

| Yeah, That's what I figure it is too. There's just such a rat's nest of wires in there, I was thinking it'd be worth it to replace the whole thing. That way when there's another problem down the road it'll be easier to find, not to mention I'm working with 17 year old wire and - more importantly - 17 year old brittle, worn insulation. I dunno now, I might just see what I can find on Saturday and just do the main power wires - +12V, Ground and ACC. We'll see... |
