doing your own scratch repair (56k beware) - Click HERE for Original Thread

beatshack
hey... thought i'd post this incase anyone is thinking of repairing their own scratches/dings etc on their car... for me, it was a fairly deep gouge in the drivers side mirror about 1.5" long, and i didn't want a half-assed touch up brush job, so i re-did the whole mirror. here's what i used:

1. scratch filler & primer: this stuff is great, spray it on in coats, let it dry, wet sand w/p600 grooved areas, repeat.
2. paint from c-max.. chances are if your car is 94 or older you'll need to go to a place to get your paint code mixed professionally.
3. clear coat... some paint codes don't require this, mine did.

next, i sanded sand down the entire surface.. painting just the scratched part of the mirror would end up with a crappy un-even finish.

you can see the depth of the scratch, right down to the plastic.

first coat of primer

wet sanding down the imperfections

after a few more steps of sanding/priming, and 3 coats of base (waiting 10 minutes between coats)

and finally 3 coats of clear (10 minutes between coats)

make sure if you do this with spray cans especially, to spray in short overlapping sweeps, and dont hold the spray too close... one run and you will have to sand down and start again.

this was my first attempt at something like this... so for anyone who wants to save a buck, try it!

Hey man that look good! Does it have real "flake" in it? Any chance you could show a pic with the painted one next to the original one?

Desro's :)

I think they are on Calgary Trail North (not 100% sure of address, I just know how to find it).

Also, don't forget to wet sand/buff the clear and it will come out even nicer!

beatshack
yes actually thats the one step i forgot... will do that tonight.... thx for the info on Desros!

Looks awesome Aaron... i havent seen it up close yet, but it looks like a nice job...

Markis
Excellent post!

yeah the clear coat was giving me the "orange peel" effect (smooth tiny bumps) because i used a spray bomb.. so i wet sanded back down to the base coat, and layered 3 more liberal layers of clear, which i will also wet send to a smooth finish :)

thanks to the guys who gave me pointers

p.s. the color c-max mixed is perfect (i'm pretty sure its mixed by computer)

oh2one8tee
hey aaron, maybe sometime we should rip off my front ant rear valences and spray bomb em... im getting a new full kit next year any way right...

motorwerks
Yo man. That actually looks really good from the pictures. Would someone explain wet sanding for me though? Sorry...

oh2one8tee
wet sanding is sanding with water too... suuuuper fine grit sand paper... it only removes the "orange peel" look (tiny bumps).... its basically the difference between a good paint job and a bad one...

motorwerks
cool thanks ryan:thumbup:

Kiddo
