My rear driver side brake is squeaking. So i figured id get them replaced... My mechanic says they are fine and still have about a year on them... my rotor looks fine so its not like the guy is lying to me... what the heck else could cause the squeaking?? i washed it thinking it might just be brake dust residue, but that didnt help... any ideas??
please and thanks...

If it's not brake dust, it could be a sticking e-brake caliper or cable. I wouldn't replace your brakes until you need to. When you do replace them, make sure you have a real good look at the hardware.

| some vehicles require shims on the pads to give them a more secure position. but if they were not needed it would put minor pressure on the rotor constantly, this could cause the pads to be in tight against the rotor and could cause premature wear as well as some noise, the squeek could also be coming from a wheel bearing, etc. |

could be a wheel bearing, but that ussually isn't a squeeking sound.
I would jack up the corner, take off the wheel, spray everything down with brake cleaner, rinse off with water, check play in caliper and maybe re-grease caliper sliders, could be binding. All pretty easy stuff to check and only cost you a couple bucks for brake cleaner! |

| i agree with twin. that would be your best bet. there are so many things that could cause a squeek. trial and error is what u'll have to do to track it down. |

| does it squeal all the time or just when u step on the brakes? could be a sticky slider, my miata had one in the rear driver side, brakes would smoke after though:eek: :( |

| only squeaks when i apply the brakes... and it doesnt matter on the speed the car is moving... it squeaks at the slightest of pressures... |

| has it been goin on long? maybe theres a rock in the brake. |

| couple of weeks now... i will take the wheel off and see what i can distinguish from that... thanks... |

I had a rock stuck right beside my rotor, and it squealed all the time  Believe me, if it's a rock, you'll know because you've pulled all your hair out! |

Oh i know, i had one in my trucks rotor for like 10min then i couldn't take it anymore, just pulled over did some reverse/drive/reverse til it worked its way out:thumbup: |

| Squeel indicators? Maybe the anti squeel plates are old? Maybe too much air behind the pads to the caliper? Non will affect the brake abillity but will make a constant squeel. Some were mentioned before but I just shot out a few off the top of my head. G luck hopes its something minor. |

| my subaru does that if i am on the brakes 30-60 percent of force. outside that range they are silent and i had them off to see if they were wore out but all the pads on the back of the car are more than 90% premain. my only conclusion for my car is that these pads are made of such a long lasting and hard material, that they squeal as a byproduct. |

na thats a totally different feel. you'd noticed warped rotors ur brake pedal moves up and down ect. |

| Not always :) I done lots of brakes sometimes you cant tell rotors are warped until you either feel it on a hard brake or squeeking. But its pretty uncommon its usually more like you said. |

I drove the car again last night and it sounds even worse than a week ago... I will take a closer look tomorrow and see if there is anything that doesnt look like it should be... it doesnt matter how much pressure i apply on my brakes... it squeels... The rotor itself looks fine... besides, even if it was a warped rotor my mechanic wouldve spotted that from the get-go... The more pressure i apply the higher the squeel... and yes it is now a squeel... Its almost as if there is some type of metal on metal going on. I just dont get what else it could be. Will look into everything you guys mentioned and give you guys an update... thanks again...
btw... its a 1995 acura integra RS... |

| Sounds like the squeel indicator , some pad brands have indicators that will touch even when the pads have loads of meat on them. I been there before its a possability. Take a look at that also take a look for those little anti squeel plates there should be 3 on each pad , you can still install pads without those plates one could easily have fallen off during installation. Just mere suggestions. BTW warped rotors are easily missed by just looking at them but your prolly right since the tec examined them for you. Good luck btw I hate that noise aswell! |

Hi ALIAS81,
Pardon me for being skeptical, however how can someone tell if there is a year left on the pads. Your mechanic should have given you a percentage of pads remaining. Reason why I say this is that brake pads wear differently from driver to driver, driving conditons, etc. Thus making it impossible to accurately judge the time frame of pad life.
Are you sure that noise is coming from the rear of the car? Is it disc brakes in the rear, or is it drums?
My guess that if it is disc then your squeelers are starting to touch the rotors. This noise becomes more and more apparant the longer you drive and do braking as you are wearing down your pads.
If you have a drum set up in the rear, it may be possible that your shoes are wearing, or even that your e-brake pads "may" be touching and need an alignment.
Also check your front brakes. The pads in the rear may be fine, but it could be the ones in the front that are worn down. You do most of your braking with your front pads. The noise you are hearing may be coming from the front, but the way it is bouncing back from the walls or traffic may make it sound from the rear.
When you relace your pads remember to machine your rotors, or get new ones. I know Darren at Brake Check will machine them for about $10.00 per rotor.
Hope this helps.

| Anti squeal disc compound on the outside of pads helps too, especially if there wasnt any put on them during the last brake job. |

update: i took the rim off and sprayed it all down with brake cleaner... did all that stuff and it still was grinding... I decided to take it to my current mechanic to see what he thinks of my family friend's overview of my brakes. Lets just say that the family friend dude doesn't know what he is talking about. When he said i had about 50% on them or about a year on them, i think he was on crack... because i took my car to my current mechanic, and he showed the pads to me... and all of them were practically down to the metal...
lesson learned... getting a quote unquote deal with a family friend isn't always the best deal... replaced the brakes... re-machined the rotors and the car is back on the road with no peep at all...
thanks again for all the replies... |

Hi Alias81,
Thanks for the update on that. I was actually wondering what was happening with that. :D Glad to hear it all worked out for you.
