Only so they can make money off our asses! And supposidly to prevent speed related deaths.... but we all know that it's the stupid ppl out there that cause death, whether they're going fast or slow.... a slow moving drunk can just as easily kill someone as can a speeding "ricer."

I'm not in favor of speed enforcement. I would prefer preventive driving schools... that teach you how to handle a car right, that teach you how to drive from 10km/h to 150+km/h.... Like we all say, the europeans aren't good drivers for no reason. They have strict driver training if you want to drive... here should be the same, why not train and prevent than charge to stop?

I am pretty sure that speed limited are posted on the low side knowing that people will speed.. but if you look at it, cars are getting better all the time and while reation time remains about the same the cars ability to stop fast is improving all the time..

I believe in going faster than posted speed limits if you feel it safe. i.e. you know the conditions, your level of skill and comfortable with the car you are driving. Speed does not kill. In all major motorsports, they are driving faster than any posted speed limits on the road and amazingly no one gets hurt. I agree speed is not the problem. But the police need money for thier other duties, so they pick the easiest way to get it. If you can't get donations or grants, you have to legally steal.

the thing is, as much as i agree with that, what guarantee or information do you have that OTHER people's skills are as good as yours? or as comfortable with their car as yours?
if you're doing 10-20km/h over the limit, yeah that's fine as long as that is the flow of traffic

but if someone thinks they're mr.hotshot (as i have noticed with MANY new license-plated driver in the YBA,YRJ, etc region) they drive like shit
weavin in & out of lanes doin 80 in a 60 while EVERYONE else is doin 55
there is a reason why ppl r drivin slow (weather!?)
those ppl THINK they can drive well but wat happens wen someone who CANT drive well cuts in front of your 80km/h ass?

you gave a good example of exactly wat i'm talkin about, in all major motorsports they're doin crazy speeds, but they are also very highly trained and on very similar skill levels

so basically wat i'm saying is, to be a good driver, A SAFE DRIVER, not only do you have to look out for your OWN mistakes...you have to look out for OTHERS mistakes
an accident is an accident, if YOU get t-boned it's not your fault but you're dead.......

just remember the motorbiker rule... your invisible on the road and everyone wants you dead.

now, applying that to a car: if you want to speed, you make damn sure you know what every other driver on the road at the same time is doing, and you act as if theyre gonna stop doing that and start doing something to make your life miserable.

im in support of active driving improvement, and yes, to some extent speed enforcement, but why 'o why do we have such low speed limits during summer on our long straight smooth highways??
another family friend was visiting from europe recently, and he drove down to calgary during some fairly miserable driving and he said "oh, it was a great drive, except some asshole cop kept trying to get me to slow down, even though i was only doing 100... then he pulled me over and was going to ticket me"
obviously my friend thought conditions good enough to drive 100kph, and ill admit hes a much better driver than i, so if he can drive 100+ during a snow storm and do alright, why can i not drive 130 kph during a nice dry clear summer day?
because the archaic posted limits, which are designed around 70s gas guzzlers trying to get better emissions, tell me i cant drive 130.

i suggest we all write our elected officials and see if we can get them to bring up the subject of revising the speed limits to suit newer vehicles, hell, they did it in the states (YAY 70mph  ) so our "progressive nation" should be able to do something too.

ManHunter
By the way, Alberta has the highest highway speed limits at 110kph. In Quebec it's 100kph.

Some studies also came to the conclusion that higher speed limits is good for the economy, because goods get to their destination faster.

Reflux, my speed is usually the speed of traffic(above the speed limit) or in front of all the traffic, no cars around the same speed. Both times the speed of my car is within15km/h.
