I know this has been discussed a thousand times but i got pulled over today and i was told by the officer that i can not have anything louder then stock on my car. I told when i purchased my car i had a blown cat so it was louder then it currently is. SO my question is do i really have to take my muffler off.

youngbex
did he give you a ticket? and is it really that loud?

It doesn't say a volume in excess of stock, it says excessive, so if it ain't excessive, it ain't illegal. :)

Mufflers
61(1) A motor vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine
must have an exhaust muffler that is cooling and expelling the
exhaust gases from the engine without excessive noise and without
producing flames or sparks.
(2) A person shall not drive or operate a motor vehicle propelled
by an internal combustion engine if the exhaust outlet of the
muffler has been widened
.
(3) A person shall not drive or operate a motor vehicle propelled
by an internal combustion engine if a device is attached to the
exhaust system or the muffler that increases the noise made by the
expulsion of gases from the engine or allows a flame to be ignited
from the exhaust system.
(4) This section applies to a power bicycle that is propelled by an
internal combustion engine.

Thats right fuck the police.

I have every Right to say that, only if you knew some of the things i have seen cops do; To me and others.

They gotta pick on people for "loud" exhaust, and Stupid shit like that, go Bust the people who are actually doing Bad shit. Selling Meth / Rock. Breaking Into People's Cars. Drinking and Driving.

Give me a break.

I don't think the meth dealers and car thieves drive around with loud mufflers either.
Which one draws more attention:
A meth head with a punched out coke can, a b&e "artist" with a can full of porcelain from spark plugs, or a sports car with a ricer can on the back?

im with clap.. i dont like the idea of paying people to pull me over because they are stereotyping people with our style of cars. use my money to get drugs off the streets and who knows maybe even bring this god damn homocide record down instead of worrying about the middle class kid with a 4" piece of metal on his car that makes a noise

The prob is excessive is up to the officier's discresion.. I remember reading in the journal a while back that the actual limit is 84db for cars and 86db for bikes @Xft away from the car at 60km/h or something like that.

The prob is our cop's aren't setup to test for it properly and thus get to use their judgement.

I got one last year. Never say never. :)

I got 3-inch straight pipe with a 4-inch tip and I've never had a problem with my exhaust. Even parked at a police station with a cop looking all over it (he used to have one) he never said shit about the exhaust, whether look-wise or when I had it running for him...

As for whether you have to take it off or not.... is up to you. If you put use a silencer... they generally leave you alone. It still makes noise... but just not as loud.
