So, I don't know much about cars and some friends recommended asking for help here....
I crashed my beautiful little Mazda 323 ('92) a few weeks ago. Made a stupid left hand turn across the Yellowhead and the car's prettty much a write off. But everything under the hood is ok.
So, I'm wondering how I can get the most money out of my poor car? Should I part it out piece by piece (if so, where/how?) or would it be better to take it to a wrecking yard? I'm wondering if I can even get any money out of it. It was in awesome shape and well maintained -- girl I bought it from took it in all the time and fixed everything they told her to.
Any advice? |

| my advice, try and part it out piece by piece. the wrecker wont give you much, if anything, for it. |

I second that. the wreckers wont give you anything. maybe 200 at most. Part it out and that will get you the most money. |

So where do I advertise? Newspaper/bargain finder/forums?
This is a really stupid question but if someone wants to buy a part do they come take it off themselves?
SOrry for being so dumb! :( |

about a month ago i was in the exact same position...i got lucky enough and my boss at work said i could put it in the yard and part it out....if you have a place to put the car...part it out yourself
and just like you i couldn't take anything off the engine if my life depended on it so anyone that wants something just comes with a friend sometimes and takes it...go to buysell.com place an ad (just online its free, and you can make it run for 4 weeks at a time) call up the auto trader and see how much an add would be..post that your parting it out here on 780. try beyond.ca also...
thats as much info i got...hopefully it helps ya out and sorry to hear about the car. |

Put it in the Bargain Finder. It's free and everybody goes there.
One thing to think of: Who owns the location where you want to park this car? Will they be okay with a smashed up hunk of junk parked there and slowly being scavenged? Also, if someone comes by and buys the tires and rims off it (or an axle or a brake rotor), you will no longer be able to move it without a forklift. |

Try posting printouts at the local grocery stores as well.
For some odd reason I always find myself drawn to them :) |

Perhaps try to sell it whole in the bargain finder first.
If it's in really good shape, you might find someone who's willing to fix it up themselves (Since it sounds like you didn't have collision, so it's not flagged as written off). |

| Thanks everyone! That helps a lot. Maybe I'll luck out and someone will want to fix it up. |

| Bargain finder is a good bet. I think its free to advertise parts on the canadatrader as well. Also, if you are up for it... theres always Ebay. |

I would suggest trying to sell the vehicle as whole since you don't know much about parts and how to remove certain parts.
I would advertise on local forums, autotrader etc.
I'm sure you can find somebody to buy the car for more than you'll get from the wrecker. |

Parting out will give you the most cash, but...do you have the time, space, car knowledge to answer questions, time to dicker with guys over part prices, knowledge of part's worth, and does the car have any value in it's parts?
Ask yourself if the hassle is worth the few hundred dollars extra you would get. I personally couldn't see making enough off an older 323 to be worth it, but that's your call. |

| i'd try to sell it as a whole car first, way easier. i can't imagine you wanting to sell pieces for months. |

Do you guys honestly think anyone would want to buy it? I was figuring on selling it as parts because I can't imagine wanting to fix it back up. There's a lot of body damage and one of the wheels is broken so I imagine something is probably messed up in the steering and all that. If I thought someone might want it whole, I would definitly try that route. And I have no clue what damaged cars sell for???
Again, thanks for all the advice. You guys rock. |

| From what it sounds like the car is probably worth $1000. I used to work at an auction where we sold written off cars. Its hard to say if you would make your money out of parting the car. You might get lucky and sell everything off the car, making a couple thousand, or you might part out on or two things for a couple hundred if that, then your stuck with a half torn apart car.I would make a couple posts for parting out your car, seeing if anyone is interested, and if there is little to no interest, id try selling the whole car. I've seen written off cars in the auto trader before too. Id put it on forums on the internet, in the bargain finder, and auto trader. Good luck! |

It's too bad that stereotypes & 1 bad experience drives people away.
Try to realize that one member of our species is not a representative of us all.
Just as we, hopefully, don't assume that 1 lady needing info on cars = all women are car clueless.
Racergirl for instance ;) |

Hey, I was just kidding! I'm sorry! I didn't mean to offend all you nice guys. Really, it is an admirable quality to want to help out. I didn't mean that as an insult to guys.
So, you guys really do rock. And I really do appreciate all the advice. It's been really helpful. |

Yikes. Are you guys that desperate? You know nothing about me!!! What if I'm a 50 year old granny?
As for what I'm going to do about Mary the Mazda, this weekend I'll get some pics of it and start posting ads. I don't think 323s are very popular tho -- maybe the special edition '88 but unfortunatly, that wasn't what I had. |

Hi Bluesuburbansky,
Sorry to hear of your loss of the 323. It sounds like it was a nice car. As for parting it out you can call the Bargain Finder and place an add there. You could place it under wrecked cars or cars for parts. I do not recall the exact headings. I do know that all ads must be in by Monday at 4:00 pm to make that weeks run of the paper. From what I recall it is free to run an ad.
You could also try EBAY, and also check to see what sort of clubs are available that may be interested in parts.
Parting out a car can be a long and tedious process. If you have the space to store the car then it can be financially rewarding for you. It is always best to try to pull the parts off your self rather than let the potential buyer do it. Reason I say this is they buyer just wants the one part. They may or may not be likely to respect your car and the parts surrounding it. They may not be as carefull as they could be.
Some stuff you may sell right away, others may take a while. You will get low ball offers on some things. Best thing to do is to know the price of your parts. Check out this link. www.car-part.com This is a link to all the auto wreckers whom have an online parts database. This will provide a good guide for you on how to price your parts. You can sell them for alot less too in order to move stuff quickly. :D
If you go to a wrecking yard you will be luck to get more than a few hundred dollars out of it. The benefit to taking it to a wrecking yard is that the car is gone and you do not need to deal with it anymore. The choice is yours. :D
Hope this helps,
Mike Nkolai |
