i just have a question, i hear this talk about FAKE HID lights or FAKE Xenon lights (whatever you wanna call them)
how can you tell?
who makes "REAL" HID's? & where can u buy them?

CRXguy
Those 'hyperwhite' bulbs that you always see in shops are the fake ones. They give off a colour similar to HID's, but they don't even come close to brightness.
I only know of 3 companies that make the real deal. Xenon, Phillips, and Vision(i think). They're roughly &#36800-850CDN.

siopao
terry, *i* don't think it's worth it... but that's just in my own opinion

CRXguy
I haven't heard any problems in regards to reliability......yet. It's more of a 'show' mod. I think it's worth it if you're more into show. It's the same quality as the ones you see on BMW, Lexus, Benz, etc.
Just be like me and get Eurolite Super Plasma bulbs. Gives the same color effect as HID, just aint as bright.:p
(Edited by CRXguy at 1:36 pm on Aug. 14, 2001)

Luong98
With the amount of money you spent on aftermarket bulbs it pays for HID. The longest a buld lasted was 6 months for me. What a waste of a &#36100.

I've heard PIAA's don't last long for some reason, and they cost a lot too.
I bought my first set of Eurolite bulbs last winter, and they have been fine since.

REFLUX
well if the real HID's last a long time then it'd b worth it
cuz if i'm changin bulbs every 6 months (loung98) it'd add up eventually

masterv
who cares if they burn out after 6 months!
jsut stick flashlight bulbs and go!

Eclipse88
I put in my Xenon bulbs about 1.5 years ago. One of them burnt out within 6 months but after I replaced it, it was not a problem. I think that installation has a lot to do with it too. Any oil that gets onto the bulbs will make it burn out pretty quick.

EG6 SiRII
aftermarket bulbs won't even come close when comparing with HID, the light is much bright on HID units. not to mention the lifespan of HID is much longer.

Swifty
I run HID in my Mustang...and trust me it is well worth the money...then again I got mine really cheap....but the kits are worth about &#36600...and the quality of lighting that you get cannot compare to any fake HID bulb out there....If you are willing to put in the time and effort it takes to make the lights work properly, they are well worth it:)

Nightstalker
Phillips makes HID like bulbs.. they put out like 135 watts of light but only draw 65... we put some in my buddies 323, in the fog lights and headlight.. he could turn off street lights at night by driving under them... it was great.. they are like 200 for 2 bulbs...

Scintillater
i sure as HELL wouldn't spend $900 on bulbs. th'ats fucking retarded in my opinion. you could get a lot more useful stuff for $900

dogstar
depends how much you drive i guess, and where you drive.

any prick who uses 135 watt bulbs in the city is really risking a fine, and an accident by blinding on coming drivers, and pissed off truckers highbeaming them. :D
i know someones gonna bitch that that only happens when they arent adjusted, and im gonna make two points...
1) if you put bulbs in and dont adjust them, pray i dont find where you park, i will put in flashlight bulbs :D
2) if someone is behind you with lights that bright, your blinded, its simple as that.

now, on the other hand, im fully in support of bright lights on the highway, you need to see where your going, and most cars poorly maintained stock lighting isnt up to the task of driving 110kph, let alone the 140+ that some (who me?? ;)) like to maintain at night.

i say get HID driving lights, as theyre less expensive, and they add a sporty look to your car, and you use them when you need them, like when your not in a brightly lit city with hundreds of other drivers around.

ClubEL (AzNBonD)
well the $900 is for the HID kits.. ie.. bulbs.. ballasts.. wiring kit.. etc

and the different is huge... and it's not "just" for show... the usefulness of HID systems are proven on dark highways with little cars.. the range of light is amazing

once i have the money i'll get me an HID kit... or better yet... get the projectors and HID system off a BMW X5 and retrofit into my headlight casing

BlueTurboEGG
I've been through over 4 brands of the HID look light bulbs and going down a dark road, I find they are all one thing: Crap.

They burn out too soon, are costly to replace over time, give off near useless light and is a total rice mod. ie. does little other than look cool.

I never form an opinion on anything without having been through it myself and this is my straight up opinion. HID's Rule the night.

I know someone in Van who has been running his HID kit for 5 years with the original bulbs, ORIGINAL, FIVE YEARS. How much money can you save?.

I think it's because there is no element to burn out like a typical incandecent based bulb. The HID is just two points and the light created is the spark caused by the electricity "arc-ing" across the two points.

ps. The guy in Van?, his bulbs are STILL going.

gunmetalalloys
i compared my friends hid's to my stock rsx lights. i parked just beside and a foot or two behind him. he thought his PIAA superwhite bulbs were brighter, but the range on both types of bulbs were identical. he also thought my bulbs were "yellow". my opinion is his bulb was slightly blue to make it appear brighter. all these so-called "HID" bulbs are coated, so there is no way they give off as much light. technically they could if they increase the resistance of the coil in the bulb, but i guess that's why they don't last long.

i'd like to compare against real HID's - they can emit more light because they get around the heat/resistance issue by not using a coil, but gas excited (not ignited:D) by 50,000V. but for $1000, i'll just drive slower....

BlueTurboEGG
I found with the light the HID look bulbs give off less useful than the stock yellowish light.

You can argue that the range is the same, but I found myself more blind with the bluish white light put out by the dummy HID's driving down a dark road.

I agree completely.

Mother F****er. I have had my 6000K Philips kit for 5 months now and 1 bulb is dead. There is a wired fried right at the connector on bulb. I'll see if I can get warranty to replace them.

Nothing compares to real HIDS. Time for some 9000K

gunmetalalloys
is that phillips a kit or just bulbs??

Dirty_SOHC
I know that they are Phillips Balasts. But as for the bulbs.... I dunno. I am currently shopping for new bulbs. Perhaps Hella or Philips.

Hey Matt, sorry about that, but I see no reason to close, lock or delete this topic.

Everything so far has been on topic, and if people want to discuss this issue, I all for it.

If people begin to report it, then I will consider closing it.

jsut by the blue crappy tire bulbs

Dr. Lightspeed
Wow $675.00 that is not a deal our regular price for months has been $550.00 for the whole kit. I don't sell anything more than 6000K unless specified becuase anymore and they don't even come close to lighting up the road. I personally prefer the 5300K lights seeing how that is the max that most of thr european manufactures will use. http://24.64.72.241/productInfo.epl?produc...cleModelID=1299

Terry IIRC from a traffic cop....

the REAL ones you can hold a piece of paper about 30cm away and it will be white light.....the FAKE ones if you do the same will still show blue!!!
