drew_goring
I realize that it is illegal to run without a cat. I'm wondering what the fines for running without one are, and how likely somebody is to be checked. Thanks

Soulfly
It's Not Illegal ....

....... Is it? :dunno:

drew_goring
that would be cool if it was legal, althought from what i've heard it is illegal. That might just be in places where they do smog tests though...

S2KPWR
any modification to your exhaust is illegal.

And I drove for about 3months b4 i sold the rsx with no cat. No tickets, no problems.

Worth it ? for the minimal gains your going to see with a N/A setup probably not. In your case, since I just noticed you have a SRT, Still probably not, cause its a turbo.

I did it because I had a SC.

And get used to your CEL being on.

drew_goring
cel is an easy fix, and I'm not going to be removing if for any gains, It's just the downpipe I want is not available with a cat. Another comparable one with a cat is like 100 dollars more.

S2KPWR
then go without a cat.

drew_goring
Yeah, I am already probably going to do this. I just want to make sure there are no laws that are going to cause me grief. Thanks

95EagleAWD
I'm catless too. 3-inch high-flow cats are expensive... I'm not spending money on one...

Like i posted last, ANY modification to your exhaust is Illegal.

SilverNeonRacer
If running without a cat was illegal then muffler shops, licensed shops would not remove them, and they do.

As far as i know Alberta and Quebec it's fine to be cat less every other provence you need one.

*edit no where in the Vehicle equipment regs is a catylitic convertor even mentioned.. and i search for "cat*" just incase I got the spelling wrong.

(2) A person shall not drive or operate a motor vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine if the exhaust outlet of the muffler has been widened.

(3) A person shall not drive or operate a motor vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine if a device is attached to the exhaust system or the muffler that increases the noise made by the expulsion of gases from the engine or allows a flame to be ignited from the exhaust system.

(4) This section applies to a power bicycle that is propelled by an internal combustion engine

The above is all that is mentioned about exhaust

and by meaning fix it i mean a brand new better flowing muffler...
i don't think so

DelSoln
This isn't California so you won't be checked. On the other hand if you enjoy smelling like fumes...

I brought my car to Fountain tire, ABC muffler, and Speedy auto and none of the shops would remove my cat for me. I dont know where you are getting your info from?

Regardless I dont care, phone the cops and ask if it really means that much to you. Pretty much any modification to your car can get a potential ticket, just has to be worded correctly on the ticket.

and here is another link... if you realy wanna do some research.

Modify and repair are completely different... you idiot.

You buy a new exhaust, It will have a cat.

If you buy a Race Header with no cat, It says on the box "for race use only".

..... and your an idiot.

repairing your exaust using non stock parts is a modification.
therefore everything is illegal according to you.
oh and in all those laws you posted where EXACTLY does it say you can't remove a cat.

Refer to last post... pay particular attention to the part "YOU ARE AN IDIOT".

Wookey
it is illegal to remove your cat. BUT, the likely hood of a police officer pulling you over and checking to see if the car still has a cat or not is very unlikely. I ran my RX-7 Turbo with 3" turbo back with no cats and i had no problems with the cops at all.

drew_goring
Thanks. That was the type of respones I was looking for

SilverNeonRacer
Gee I went to a buncha placed to get prices on getting my cat removed, the only place that wouldn't to it was CT cause they "didn't have a preformed section to put back in"

I went to Thrifty - $50-$60 to have it removed - I actually book an appointment but canceled and went to the place 0n Ft. Road and 67th and got it done for $60 and they did it right then and there didn't have to wait a couple days.

Shoot a couple years back I had a cat removed on a different car but a well known muffler shop that moved or something.. it was on 82ave just east of the old scotia on 75th

icydude
If your worried about fine or looking illegal you have an option.

Take the cat out and empty it.

On the inside there will be honeycome looking meterial and all you have to do is takea drill/bore/hammer/screwdriver and break it up.

As of this date there is nothing illegal about removing just the converter from an exhaust system as Alberta has NOT YET adopted emissions testing. The HTA (Highway Traffic Act) no longer applies as it has not been in existence since the TSA (Traffic Safety Act) took its place in May of 2003. The VEH (Vehicle Equipment Regs) is still in existence but has been re-written to compliment with the TSA.

Remember, this applies to Alberta & not such provinces as B.C. etc that have emissions / safety inspections in place.

I guess if you were going to be really sticky on the law, removing a cat would allow the unburnt fuel to ignite. So it could be argued that it is illegal.

If your exhaust is woofing around the police you probably have other concerns that this law though :D
