| Anyone know of a good place to get my alternator checked that's open on Saturday? I'm only reading 13.2V at the battery, so I'm pretty sure that's the problem, but I just want to be sure before I order a new one for $150. |

| Start the car and disconnect the battery and if the car dies then your alternator is dead if it stays running it should be good. |

| thats not the greatest way use a volt meter and refer to your factor service manual if you dont have one there online at iluvmyrx7.com is pretty easy |

| It was the current that I was wondering about. I don't have a meter big enough. I got it checked. 2A @ Idle, 35A @ 5.5K RPM. (the tech at Canadian Tire was scared to redline it :p)Max 13.2V. I'm thinking maybe the pulley's the wrong size. The FSM says 55A @ 2500RPM, so the current's not coming. The voltage is way low too though, So I'm not sure... Anyone have ideas? Time for a new one? |

I am currently having the same issue with power I'll have to take it in and get it tested as well. I am using a Racing Beat dual belt pulley I think its 15% larger than the stock one. That could be the problem.
Thanks for the info on what the power should be like. |

| I take my alternators to Cooper Brothers, on 99th St across from Cal Tire. They bench test em for 5 bucks, and know what they are talking about. But they are not open Saturdays so far as I know. |

Well,
Due to lack of cheap oprtions, I got a new Alt for the car. Swapped it in and BAM! It's all good again. I guess it WAS the alternator. I suspected as much all along, but I really didn't have the money. Guess I can have heat AND headlights on the way to work Monday! |

| How much was the alt worth? Did you get it from Mazda? |

Any idea whether they would sell individual components over the counter?
I don't trust too many rebuilders after taking several apart as part of the NAIT automotive program.
Several hadn't put new brushes in, most had reused bad front bearings as long as they didn't sound bad when assembled, some had bad regulators & a couple had the wrong stator for the vehicle. The worst was a Dixie brand alternator where they just cleaned the housing & threw it into a new box. Basically it seemed most rebuilders did enough to probably get it past their warranty period.
I would be interested in getting an alternator from Joe's though, I've heard good things about them, so maybe they're one of the few shops that actually does the complete job.
My two cents anyway.

I was getting a shifter boot anyway and asked at Mazda. Don't get it there. $258
Unfortunately, I can't tell you what it'd cost you 'cause I work in a heavy truck warehouse. I got it direct from Dixie at cost. I pay roughly what NAPA's supplier does.
P.S. I've heard good things about joe's, but a new one was cheaper than rebuilding... |
