Rx7 Question HELP - Click HERE for Original Thread

ccthompson
i got a question for you guys about my 7... :D

lately when i am drivin and i start slowing down for a stop light or if i am just goin slow... i keep on hearin like a "click click" sound or something along those lines comin from my passenger side rear end... :(

what do ya think it is???

Graham
I had a similar sound on my front drivers. It was the brake pads. They were fairly worn (not to the squeeler yet) but replacing them fixed the issue.

ccthompson
i will have to take a look at it tomorrow see if maybe it is the brakes.... :)

i will be happy if it is just the brakes cause i really don't want it to be the diff.

Does it occur even during light braking or do you have to apply a little more pressure to get it to do it? One method to determine if it is the brakes on that side is to get a brake hose pinching tool & pinch off the hose on that side, effectively disabling it, then take it for a drive & see if the noise disappears. If you use anything other than a brake hose tool (vice-grips) you'll probably ruin your brake hose.

well now that i think of it... it doesnt really do it ONLY when i brake.... if i am in 1st gear and crawling at like 5-10km/h with no brakes on it still makes the noise

its like it makes the noise whenever the car is goin slower then 20km/h

That makes it a little more difficult to diagnose, the first thing I would do is get the vehicle on jackstands & check the suspension out. Basically leave the steering unlocked & in neutral, then grab the top and bottom of the rear tires trying to pull the top while pushing the bottom, then pushing the top & pulling the bottom & so on to check for free play (wheel bearing check). To check the front wheel bearing is the same, also grab the front & back of the tire & use the same motion to check tierod ends. To check lower ball joints pull & push the bottom of the tire. The problem you describing though seems indicative of a universal joint problem, to check for free play simply push & pull the driveshaft near the U-joint, there should be no play. If this still doesn't find anything get someone to start the car up & "drive" it on the jackstands, & see if the noise is still there. If none of this works you might need to go to a shop that has "chassis ears" to isolate the problem.

alright... i am plannin on puttin it up on jack stands tomorrow afternoon to see if i can see anything... and i will try all of that... i will also check the brakes tomorrow just incase

is there anything else i should prob. check for as well???

ozzmodan
Except for rocks in the tires & differential & transmission problems under load that should cover it.

alright well thanks for the tips u guys....

i will try that stuff out :blue:

well after many times of jacking the car up and finding nothing that seemed worn or broken, i finally diagnosed the problem...

so i get a new mag the otherday and i put a new tire on it and i put the tire on tonight... take it for a test drive... turns out all that noise was coming from my tire on that side.... :dunno: :D

although i still get a little bit of rattling from the rear cause when i got my exhaust done the exhaust place cut the supports off of the heat shield under the fuel tank... so it rattles back and forth cause it isnt bolted down
