You don't clean the Apexi filters because you can't. They're not "washable". But that doesn't mean there's no problem. What do you do when it gets dirty (and they WILL get dirty)... throw it away and buy ANOTHER expensive filter?
90+% of the Z community is happy with the JWT POP Charger. Its tried and true. |

| And as far as horsepower numbers, it's pretty negligible in terms of percentage. I would guess maybe 10-12 hp at peak at rear wheels and maybe 5 hp throughout the rpm range. You won't feel the difference, at least I didn't. You may hear it breathing at most. |

Which site did you pick your pop charger from? Does the pop charger filter well? |

Pretty much EVERY Z parts vendor out there sells the JWT POP Charger. Look around, you should be able to find it for $90-$100 USD.

Yes. |

Exactly what Jason said.
I actually got mine used from Tim M.
It sure does free up space under the nose panel. |

You Bastard! thats who I was going to get mine from (spoke with him a while back at the 780 meets and he offered it to me but i had no cash lol and then when I did you had already bought it off of him! :p  ) I think i'm going to order mine from Courtesy Nissan. |

lol. sorry dude.
Yeah, everybody seems to have it for around $85 - $100 US.
That reminds of the huge list of parts that I need to order over the winter... |

| i would go with the popcharger since majority use it =)...little off topic but does anyone take off the screen on ur mass air flow sensor? or do u keep the screen on? any difference with out it? |
|
|
| vorpalz |
I would leave the screen on, in the of chance you get something nasty past the filter that could possibly take out your hot-wire in the MAF. Not cheap to replace.
I just was cleaning and replacing my intake on Saturday, and checking the screen to make sure it was OK. Found some minor dust and micro-gravel inside the filter! Beat it all out and re-assembled. Made damn sure all clamps were tight.
Removing the screen would not be an improvement, IMHO.

You do NOT want to remove the screen on the MAF sensor. It acts as a sort of straightening vane for the air stream. If you remove it the MAF won't read properly. |

So, I assume there is a filter of some sort that goes in the opening of the intake housing? If I leave this on would it decrease the performance of the pop charger in anyway? So The JWT pop charger seems to filter as well as the K & N filters?...letting some dirt through?...I'm asking because I read a post about cone style intakes and found alot of them didn't filter all the dirt out of the air...this is the link and article i'm talking about.

Not sure what you mean here. The only filter is the pop charger itself.

Even those paper factory filters let a little dust through. |

Edwin, you're over-analyzing this to death. Really, the choice of intake should be the easiest decision you have to make.
That test you linked to has been kicked around the internet for 4-5 years. Its nothing new. But honestly there are THOUSANDS of people using the JWT POP Chargers, with no issues. And if I'm not mistaken there were people on tt.net that proved for themselves that the JWT makes more power over the Apex'i filters, for what its worth.
Buy the Apexi if you like, but I personally don't buy the *claim* that its maintenance free and will never need to be cleaned or replaced in the lifetime of the car. |

I agree with Jason. In fact, I did a search on twinturbo.net and found that not too many people are using the Apexi and most people trust the JWT. And thousands of Z32 owners can't be wrong.
And the Apexi will not last a lifetime. Give a year or two and it will need to be junked. But if you feel like spending $100 US every year or two on an air filter, go for it.
But hey, Jason, didn't you ask this same question a few years ago on twinturbo.net ;) - yes I did search... lol. |

lol nevermind, I'll find out when I rip a part the air box to install the pop charger in spring...over-analyzing is my middle name lol...sorry |

I just did a search of my own to check. I found two posts by me on the subject, both in 2001. The first one in April I wasn't asking a question, I was responding with advice to someone else and my stance wasn't too much different then than it is now. The next one in July I posted a link to a test. (The link is dead, but I don't think its the same test Edwin linked to. It involved some guy using a household aircleaner unit of some kind, not a vacuum per se, and didn't test all 4 that were in the other test. I forget the details...) I posted it for discussion purposes and posed the open question "why aren't all of us right now not running to the trash bin to toss out our JWT pop chargers and buying the Apex'i?", with a smiley face of course.
I've had my JWT POP Charger since spring 1999, and have never needed nor felt the need or desire to buy another intake.
Oops, found one more, from March 2001. This was when I first saw the "test" that Edwin just posted here. Here I'll quote myself:quote:
"I was snooping around the mkiv.com Supra site the other day and noticed in their tech section that they had comparison test results of the filtering capability of a few of the most popular air filters. Based on their ability to filter out particulates (ie. crap), here's how they ranked:
Apex'i: very good
K&N: good
Blitz: poor
HKS: very poor
The data was mostly in Japanese, but it appeared that they all gave roughly the same power gains.
Just curious if anyone is using the Apex'i on their Z and how they like it."
I asked this only once, and it was not a dilemma of do I buy this one or that. Like I said I already had a JWT POP charger. It was merely a curiosity.

I was just joking :) Jason. Didn't mean any harm.
Hey Edwin - here are some helpful links when you go to install the POP Charger:
1. http://www.twinturbo.net/ttnettech/pop/pop.html
2. http://s95014253.onlinehome.us/63104/80397.html
I think link #2 is informative as to how to place the pop charger as I guess some people were having issues with the car stalling at highway speeds due to turbulence and negative pressure. Some people solved it using duct tape to block the lower part of the filter, but the solution on the link is better.
Good luck with the install - it's pretty easy and I am newbie with the Z32TT and novice at working on cars. |

| LOL.... half-hour tops. And I was a noob when I installed mine too. |

| I agree. It took me about 25 minutes to find all the tools scattered around my garage and then about 30 minutes to install. |
