Just curious where did you guys apply the 3M tape on the Z32's? I was thinking the hood, front fenders, head lights and I was also thinking the center nose panel with the “Nissan” badge (maybe). Anywhere else you guys decided to cover? My front bumper has the rock chips on the front lip of the car...but it has the OEM rock guard down there already...so that would make that hard to tape up with 3m and would kind of look bad because of the texture (wouldn't sit evenly?)...So is there any place you guys would recommend? I was thinking Malcolm's tinting in spring when I get the front repainted.
thanks again,

I haven't done it to my Z yet. Don't think I will. Just don't follow gravel trucks. I don't think the headlights need it as they are plastic (correct me if I am wrong).
The only place I did apply it (and I did it myself) was on the fog lights after I changed the lenses out.
If I was to recommend a place, it would be Ziebart. I had my tinting and 3M clear stuff done there on my other car. |

| The Z32 headlights are glass. |

| damn. has anybody ever had them crack or chip? Seems pretty thick and the angle of them doesn't appear to take a square hit from rocks. |

one of mine has a little chip in them...can't even really tell but still want to protect them instead of letting them chip away over time. |

Of course not, but there still are tiny rocks on the road that get kicked up and end up on hitting the front of my car. |

I replaced one of mine about 5-6 years ago. A rock went right through it. But not only that, they tend to pit over time too.
Tim M. replaced both of his, just for cosmetic reasons if I recall correctly, just from pitting. |

I have a fairly thick clear plastic coat on the headlight lenses. I was on the Z when I bought it from Rick S. Close up, it looks kinda goofy, with holes cut in for the 'bumps' on the headlight lens, but from a moderate distance, you can't tell. No problems with headlight brightness, either.
As for 3M coating for the front nose panel/hood area, my wife has it on her G35C. When I clean and detail her G (my weekend trade-off for getting to drive it :D) I find the coated area looks cloudy compared to the bare painted surfaces. It prevents rock chips, but on a black car, the demarkation lines definitely stand out. It doesn't polish up well, showing more whiteness due to microscratching. Not as bad as a car bra, but noticeable.
Maybe with red, it wouldn't show as much.

I have it on the hood of my 2002 (Sand-Mica aka gold) Protege. It does get dirty and it doesn't come out clean in the touchless automatic car washes. When I clean it by hand it does come out clean. You can tell it is there from the line, but the paint does show through perfectly fine. Just needs maintenance, that's all.
But I agree with VorpalZ. On a black car, it does look cloudy after a few years. |
