Just a general question to get a discussion going. A couple of times last week I saw a photo radar van parked southbound on 97th St a couple of blocks north of 137th Ave. In this area the speed changes from 70kph to 60kph, but the PR van was parked deep in the 70 zone, and any pics it would be taking would probably just show the offending car abreast of the speed change approaching sign (you know the 60 with the arrow that lets you know the limit's going to change ahead).
Here's the question. If somebody got nailed by the PR for exceeding 60kph, but they were not actually in the 60 zone, would they be able to fight it? I'd say yes, because if your speed was not in excess of 70, then you weren't speeding (because you're still in the 70 zone).
What's your thoughts on this, and feel free to just bitch about PR in general if you've got nothing useful to contribute too. :p |

Let's not bitch about PR...:drama:
As to where any photo would be taken, doing 70km/h in a 70km/h zone, which may or may not have a "60km/h Ahead" in it, will not warrant a ticket...as a speed zone does not begin until you pass the RB-1 "60km/h" sign.
This may be a case though of the portable device being located a little further down the road, say in the 60km/h zone, with the van a good ways back...which may be a safer place to park. :dunno:
If you drove past it enough times to notice it, and see it again, take a quick picture of where the van was sitting, just in case. |

Its an inevitability that we must accept when this topic is discussed. Death, taxes, bitching about PR, etc., etc....

No portable there, just the PR van. This location has gotten a lot of attention over the summer, I've seen the EPS with laser set up at this location many times and they are always shooting the approaching vehicles while they are in the 70 zone, but had them pulled over either after the 60 sign, or between the 60 and the approaching change sign.
I'm just curious if anybody on here has been caught there and what sort of fine they got? :dunno: |

I'd be willing to bet that when the picture is taken, you are in the 60KM/H zone.
The range on the unit is far enough - and if they're smart, they'd snap the picture with the speed limit sign in it for proof.
You should be able to correlate with the picture whether you were in a 70 or 60 zone. Obviously if you were in the 70 zone you can't get ticketed for going 65. However, there's nothing stopping them from following you through the 70 zone and ticketing you right when it drops to 60.
It's dirty pool, but the pressure is probably on them from all the accidents around 97/137. |

Don't know (and I'm not about to go out and test my theory), that's why I posted it on here, to see if anybody had gotten nailed.
You're right about the accident thing though. The speed was changed earlier this summer as a result of the accidents and they've been enforcing at this location since. The thing with the laser was odd though, simply because the guy with the laser was in the 70 zone and shooting oncoming vehicles, then radioing back to the guys in the 60 zone where they'd wave them over for a ticket. :dunno: |

| does it really matter??? msot of the time youll only get snapped for going 15 over anyways so youll have to be goin about 75 to get a pic taken in the 60 zone. |

Dunno, why don't you do a flyby the next time they're there and report back on what kind of ticket you got. :) |

| exactly my point is either way youd either have to be doing 85 to get a ticket, or 75.. either way you deserve the ticket if you got one |
