Just got curious about members here and the extent of there independance.
Feel free to give a brief description if you live at home (parents house) or on your own. Your age how long you been on your own (If you are) what kind of rent/board you pay. Living arrangements or whatever else comes to mind. Im doing a personal survey.
:) Thanks |

Been living with my SO on our own for about 4 years now. Before that I was king of the couch surfers hardly stayed at one place very long.
When I lived at home I was hardly there since I was 15.
I live in my second apartment now , rent is $625 2 bedroom.
Pay only electricity , Internet , phone and food.
We share down the middle. If one of us is short the other covers it.
Before we had the smallest house in Wetaskiwin. It was tiny smaller than most peoples sheds lol. Then I got a BIG 3 bedroom 1200ft house with a massive 4 bay garage. Rent was $500 + utillities. Then I was evicted after a couple months. Sufed couches for a couple years , gf's folks farm , my folks , friends ect... ect... |

lived on my own since my parents gave me the boot at 15, flopped from house to house... (ty superpirate), then joined the army.
On my second house now, own it, well with my g/f. |

Live with my wife, before she covered all the home side bills and I covered all the car side bills, Now it's sorta split, almost evenly(if you could her car payment) If you don't I pay way more.
I want a house, no good ones here, the one I wanted sold last year. Plus I might have a hard time getting a mortgage right now.... still wanna house though |

Live on my own in a condo, got it when i was 24.
Costs about $1200/mo, if you don't count what went into the downpayment. |

my house is 1400 a month, not including utilities.. blah.
g/f makes a decent income which helps. |

living in my rented bungalow with unfinished basement, 2 bedrooms, and i can make all the fucking noise i want and nobody else can ever disturb me once I turn off the cellyphone. $700 plus utils is high, but entirely worth it considering i have a yard, driveway and free mowing service... actually it's not that high. damn!
but i don't spend much time here anymore now that I have a girlfriend who cooks supper for me if i come over after work, and usually stay for "dessert". |

I live at home but i toss the parents rent. Reason im still at home is its a prime location for everything i do , and i couldn't afford anything in this neighborhood. They charge me 250 for everything which i love them for.
Im savin up i just turned 20 , i plan before 23 to be makin payments on a house.. but life is funny so you never know.. |

23 - live on my own (Well, I have 2 buddies that live with me so my house isn't completely abandoned all week) in my own place for almost 1 year now. Pay ~$3000/month for my mortgage payments.
I used to always think owning a house would be great, but with the amount I work I truly appreciate the convinience that an apartment-style condo offers.
Hell, some days I wish I still lived at home rent free like the good old days. |

Me and the fiance bought a house and got possession Dec. 1. I am still living at home until we get the place cleaned up/painted etc. Sooooo excited to get out of here though. |

This is something a country boy like me will never understand. |

Different strokes for different folks. That's the kind of money it takes for:
- 1000 sqft
- new building
- downtown location
- all utilities/fees/taxes
- internet/cable
- heated underground parking
- virtually no maintenance
Suits me just right, although I'd like a garage. |

That's absolutely correct - the mortgage amount is for 150K (I put 50K down).
Should be another 2.5 years until it's all paid off now at most.
Nothing is better than knowing that if something bad happens, I don't need anymore than $500-800/month to survive |

Thanks!
It's really a tough battle - especially in the spring next year when I have ~$10K in income tax due and ~$2000 in property tax.
There's going to be a big mortgage burning party going on when it's all over! |

That's just it. I'm sure it's perfectly reasonable for city folk, but I grew up unable to see, or even hear, my neighbours. 1000sq/ft would just be too constricting, when you're used to 350 acres. For me, living in an apartment felt like living in a box. Not that suburbia is much better. |

For those of us that don't have time to maintain a house, the apartment is a perfect option. |

1012 sq ft condo, 2 bdrm 2 bath, share with my girlfriend. $680/month mortgage, $240 in condo fees, which include gas and water. Pay electricity and phone on top of that. We're not home enough to bother getting cable, we rent movies instead.
And SilverZ24, it's silver ghost from JCA, in case you haven't figured it out yet. You know that you're the one helping out your wife, she makes way more money than you :blue:  |

For the money, it was either a really nice condo, or a shitty house in millwoods or the north side.
I think I would die if I lived on a farm. |

And there you have it. Different strokes indeed. If you'd die on a farm, I'd be the one killing to live on it. And I bought a house in millwoods to get out of an apartment. Though I wouldn't call it a shitty house, by any stretch.
I guess we just defined the two types. City folk vs. Country Bumpkins.

I personally would like a bit of both. I don't like being right beside my neighbors in the city (although my new house is on a large pie lot so it isn't as bad as most) but I also couldn't stand to be in the middle of nowhere on a farm (my inlaws have a quarter section by Carstairs).
Unfortunately the middle ground for me is a 2 acre lot within city limits with full city utilities. My wife wants that and while most of those lots are around 200 grand, we would only have enough money left to build an average home on it and unfortunately all the areas in town with 2 acre lots expect you to build a house worth 500 grand plus. It will probably be a long time if ever before I can live that dream. lol |

Me personally, and the wife too, want to live just outside town on a smaller acreage(2-3acres) We had one, but it was a little too far out of town. We're waiting for there to be a highspeed internet outside town... coming spring so not much of a wait. But still need to find a place or build, etc, etc.
We had another intown here, smaller lot, 50by100, but was completely surrounded by trees, could see the neighbour on the right, and there was 1 more house past him. only 3 houses in the whole devision so to speak, very private. Too private dude robbed us on Christmas day a couple years ago, took a buncha loads by hand, then came back with a stolen truck and nobody noticed. |

I was just in Vancouver this weekend. Lots of the houses there are about 2 feet apart (side to side) with no alleys. Things are very tight there.
I read an article in the paper there that said Edmonton and Calgary were the hotest markets in the country, though Vancouver was still the most expensive.
Avg home prices were something like this:
Van: $487k
Calgary: $287k
Edmonton $218k
I don't think I could afford to live there (or Ft. McMurray, ha ha, poor bastards). |

Just like new! Enjoy the best of both worlds - living on an acreage & only 5 minutes to town. Rented lot ($250/mo). Immaculate home with 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths including a jacuzzi tub, spacious kitchen with pantry, island & lots of counter space, laminate flooring in LR, tile in kitchen, vaulted ceiling, skylight, neutral colors, new pressure treated deck with built-in 8 man hot tub and much more.
Thats $106,000
And the inside looks nowhere up tot he quality/level of the Ft Mac one... not nasty.. but not great. |

We technically have a housing shortage up here.... one guy has a 7 room house... he rents out to 6 people, and he lives there too.
I think there's like 4 or 5 hourses for sale right now.. and they don't stay for sale for long, only if their asking way to high of a price. One place has been listed for 2 months, cause they want $190,000 for a $160,000 house. |

I'm not that bad.... heh it's hole alright though... it is in a valley.
I actually prefer living here than in Edmonton, food, is cheaper(from the grocery store) for most things, very low crime. AND the unlike the westlock cops... they have no clue what lights are legal or illegal.. They don't care about exhaust size or noise....
I left my keys in my car for a whole day, nothing happened... my wife has left her car unlocked for a week... nothing happened.
And really it's not that far to Edmonton should I need something. |

Living at home with the rents, but paying room/board.
$400 a month, covers living, utilities, internet, etc, etc. Only things I pay for out of pocket are my cell phone, bus pass, gas, and any other luxuries. It's steep, but not too bad. They're taking 100 bucks of it each month and putting it in an RRSP and helping me start some other funds so I'll have some cash when I'm old. |

Truly commendable - it shows your parents also have a grasp on their financial future. |

In athabasca there a few older homes for sale but, they want too much for such a old home. And my dad workes on are farm and in fort Mc Murry trucking and he said alot of people from Fort Mc Murry are selling there homes and moving around athabasca, becuase it cheaper to drive once or twice a week 3 hours then to live there. |

Ya a couple of my neighbours do that. My neighbours husband does oilfield work, and he's home for 2 weeks every 4 month now. when he's away the company pays for room and board. With his old job he was away more.. heh for the first 6mo I lived here I though she was a single mother.. til I saw him and I was like wtf? heh.
I'm probably gonna have to build if I want a place at a decent price. |

| Living on my own (if you can call it that) in residence at the U of A. Parents are paying for some of it (money they had saved for my school) and I'm paying the rest. I only get a room to myself, but I'm happy with it as I've got everything I need in it or in the building. Plus, I don't have to worry about traffic or buses, just when I'm going to get up for class. |

Personally I cant wait to get married in 2 1/2 weeks, cause after that its a nice PMQ for me :D. personally I cant complain, a 1200 ft condo for 675 a month and all utilities paid for, hell I even get free meels at the mess :) |
