In motorsports, THIS IS considered a beginner event. Rallies would be considered the more advanced competitions.
Our rallycrosses are all first and second gear stuff. I think top speed is about 70 kmph. If you wipe out big time, you just slide across the gravel and take out some pylons. We set up the courses so there's nothing (solid) you can hit. The parking lot is pretty smooth so you won't damage your car. You MIGHT get a rock chip, but nothing worse than driving your car on the streets of Edmonton in wintertime would do.
You don't need any special equipment, just you, a car in basic good condition (no loose ball joints, or wheel bearings, steering, brakes and tires in good condition, battery tied down under the hood). You need a helmet, but there's lots of loaners floating around at our event if you don't have one.
This is the beginner event you're looking for. |

we have only 7 drivers comfirmed:eek:
that could make for lots of track time for those "tough guys & gals" who brave the elements and risk frostbite or even death to stand out in the +5 weather we are going to have on sunday...
the forcast looks great come on out and watch the eXcitment... |

| I may show... if it's snow covered, I'll run for sure. But I got fresh paint on the side of my car and don't feel like firing rocks all over it... |

| I just have some quick questions. First of all I learned from the last one i went to that i could not carry the echo's lightweight momentum into the corner very fast like in normal autox hence the off course i did. Also I know from experience that if ur going too fast for ur front tires grip and u pull the ebrake, u go'll straight and sideways accomplishing nothing. So wats the key? Also my pedal work is hard, i find that slowing down for the corners and with poor excelleration and all season tires, it takes forever to get back up to speed. Wat is the key!!! |

May i offer this:
1st slow down to speed up..... you will be faster in the turns if you enter slower and use steady power around the turn roll on the power after you are heading in the right direction
2nd set up........... if you pass the pylon and then turn you will be late on the next pylon and more late on the next one after that. Try to get the car turning before you pass the pylon come in wide and cut just before. the more set up the faster you can drive.
3rd use the hand brake only in these 2 conditions. 1 when there is no hope of you making the turn any other way. this is because you are "late" 2 the turn is so tight "eg hairpin" you need to set up the car to make a smooth transition... driving at the gate yarding on the hand brake stopping and then gas to the floor is a very very slow way to make the turn.
at the last 2 events i watched car after car hug the last pylon and then try to make a 180 in a 6 foot space in the stop box. if you are 6 feet wide on the last gate you had 12 feet to do a 180. going wide is slow but its much faster than backing up!!! |

| you should come on up.... this event will be talked about for a long time after. |

Demolisher;
It's kinda hard to explain (and takes a LONG time to type). But, if you show up at the next event, go for a run with me, and I'll explain it. I'll show you how I do it.
Basically, you drive the car as if you were on a snowboard. You don't try to stop a snowboard from sliding, you work with the slide. Same thing in rallycross. 4 wheel drifting allows you to carry speed through the turns.
Next, you have to be done with a pylon when you get to it. You need to be pointed at the next pylon as you pass the current pylon. If you're still turning after the pylon, you're behind, and you'll never catch up.
To make a FWD car turn, you go hard on the throttle until you want it to turn, then lift COMPLETELY off the throttle. This shifts the weight forward onto the steering wheels, and unloads all the weight off the back wheels, which immediately start to pirouette around behind you. To stop from looping the car entirely, jump back on the throttle.
Finally, forget the handbrake. It's way too hard to modulate properly when your adrenalin is screaming in your ears. |

| well put dave! now are you going to use that on sunday to become the edmonotn rally X winner. or will you just floor it and hope for the best...... |

Wow good writeup actually! I will most likely be coming up as i am studying my ass off, there is 2 exams the next day!
I wasnt sure that weight transfer had much of an effect on rallycross. Ill be looking forward to it! |

| The 2006 Rallycross season will start up in early March |

| 20 to 30 left on your brakes.... that 20,000 km for me all of the racing on sat will only use >1% unless you drive with the both pedals to the floor.... |
|
|
| rexxrally |
| Yeah, exactly. The course is about 2kms long and you get 4 runs, so that's a total of 8kms. On gravel, you don't use as much brakes because the tires can't grip as well as they can on pavement. Also, at the last event my winning time averaged 42 kmph, so we're not talking braking from triple digit speeds or anything. I probably only have about 20-30% pads left on my car, too, cause it's my daily driver. So, you won't use up a lot of your brake pads at the event. |

| Im not sure if ill be able to make it anymore on account of my car. I hit a curb yesturday, yes im an idiot. Their trying to quote me 500 for a broken tie rod, realignment and labor which is complete bs. I do want to watch the event but ill c, as my car is drivable. |

| Well, if you can make it, great. If you can't no, probs. They'll be another one in March. |

| If I ever get some suspension upgrades happening this sounds like a great event for the GT4. I could use some practice racing with the AWD. |
|
|
| rexxrally |
You don't need to do suspension upgrades. Run your car stock first and see how it handles. Mike and I both ran absolutely stock Neons and we tied for the FWD championship, proving you don't need to upgrade your car to win.
Not only that, but look at the standings for event #4. I beat 8 out of the 9 Subarus in a stock Neon. I'm n ot saying I'm better than them, I've just got a lot more experience, and more experience with less equipment will beat less experience with better equipment.
So, come out and do it sooner with your stock car, rather than waiting until you get better equipment. You might find (like I did) that your stock car handles quite good.
Our next event will be in early March.
PS: I love your video clip. Is that Oilers vs. Flames?

| Where do you go to practice for free? I mean FREE. |
|
|
| rexxrally |
| Well, for that, you would need to have your own property, suitable for practicing. I certainly would not advocate practicing on the street, and practicing on someone else's property (can you say "mall parking lot after a snowfall") is also equally illegal. |

I am not thinking of upgrading suspension components to enter contests, it's more to make it handle better overall. I have a decent feel for the handling but we always want more, don't we?
The clip was from a Vancouver/Calgary game. If you watch it closely you see the Vancouver player catch Phaneuf's knee with his stick as Phaneuf drops the gloves to fight. The Canuck trips Phaneuf and goes off on a line change, leaving him on his ass. |
