Purpose of plastic floor coating? - Click HERE for Original Thread

ozzmodan
When I took the interior out of my car I noticed mazda on top of the painted floor they added several black brittle plastic panels onto the floor & painted them to match. What were they hoping to accomplish with this stuff? :dunno:

Was it just to ease sharp edges?
Does it have any kind of sound dampening quality?

It's sound deadener.

That stuff is heavy as hell isnt it?

just get rid of the sound deadening and keep it that way.

I didn't think the actual dynomat brand stuff was that bad, I could be wrong though. I know that stuff that Visions sells (imported from England) weighs more than lead it seems.

yah especially if your car is loud your going to go deaf with out it lol makes it quite a bit louder.... although in total I think it weights in at 22 pounds for the front and back.

Yea until a bit of moisture gets between that sound deadener material and the floor and rusts it out

In theory, it is inside the car so moisture isn't a huge concern. The main thing I was concerned about it the fact that it's got spidering cracks all over the place & when I'm painting it, I'm doing it a different colour & don't want any traces of the original paint.

If you really want to get rid of it get some dry ice and chip away at it. Thats the best way to do it.
