i am going to cage my 2004 cavalier and make it a rally car... on thur night a car turned left in front of my wife totaling or new cavi.......

air bags deployed, front end minor damage, wife minor damage, other car bent frame....

total repairs to our car 750.00 + airbags and computer stuff 6750.00

so it is now going to be a rally car. under warrenty still!

Gonna need a bigger trailer again to carry all your RallyX cars.....

Glad to hear the wife is okay. She's the only irreplaceable part.

worst thing about the whole deal.... bumper cover and fome are the only fooked up parts... the dash is fine the cavies dont explode when the airbags go off... kinda dum i guess 3 mph less and the car would be fine. now its a total loss. just hope they dont flag it. should be ok didn't even mark the hood or fenders....... didnt even bust a head or fog light.

oh well good "rally" car! not rally x car

my brother was just in a collision with his new chevy s10. Both his airbags deployed. Is that 6750 just for fixing the airbags? Im trying to figure out if they are going to write off his truck or not...

turbomike
if the bags go 95% of the time the vehical is toast. of course you can buy it back remove the airbags and drive it as is... if it was my car i would just remove the bags fix it and drive it but for my wife i want all the safety i can get..

there is no law that says you must replace the bags!

Actually there is, Mike. it's a Transport Canada law that says all cars in Canada must have all the safety equipment that originally came in the car.

turbomike
its sugjested but not mandatory

turbomike
so if a person wants to run a 2004 wrx they must have bags intact

i talked to transport canada and i was told that all questions regarding seatbelts and airbags are under the provincial department of transport...

so i called alberta transport and i was told race cars fall under different rules and legislation. "yes they can be removed with the proper form filled out"

Provincial departments handle handing out tickets and impounding cars, but it's still Federal jurisdiction for seatbelts and airbags. That's why on the RIV website you find all the cars that are ineligible for import into Canada. Many of them are because the seatbelts are bolted into the doors, or they have those motorized mechanisms, which are federally illegal in Canada. The Feds don't enforce the rules, that's provincial jurisdiction. But they still set the rules. Same as tires. Technically, all tires used on cars on the roads of Canada must have that maple leaf symbol on them.

Terry Epp of CARS has been going through all of this with Transport Canada recently and he's been filling us in on all the details. If you go to the AGM in Vancouver, talk to him about it. He'll tell you all about it.

It may be legal to remove them from race cars, but that's because they define race cars as "vehicles which may never be driven on the public highway". Rally cars are different, because rally cars MUST be driven on the public highway during competition. It makes rally cars unique because of this combination of racecar-street car. You can get the form approved for things like because you are too small and must sit close to the steering wheel, or have kids that MUST travel in the front seat. But unless you have a reason like that, they won't approve the form. And having the car in an accident and you don't want to pay to replace them is not a valid reason. Nor is wanting to use the car for rallying.

If you want to deactivate your air bags, you have to fill out a form and get it approved by Transport Canada. Here's the form in question: http://www.tc.gc.ca/pdf/13-0140.pdf. You'll see on this form that only certain reasons are valid for deactivation (like I said above).

Now that's the legal definition, much like speed limits are legal definitions. People speed and are therefore breaking the law. It's only illegal if you get caught. The same with rally cars. I won't say anything here about people removing air bags, stock seatbelts, or using not-approved tires on the street. I've heard rumours that it happens somewhere, though........
