rear ended someone - Click HERE for Original Thread

morningla
Driving to work, must have had slow reaction in the morning, only going around 40-50km/h.

anyway by the time i brake, my car slid. damn there wasn't even any snow and I slid for like 3 feet, slightly bumped the car in front.
Do snow tires suck in wet roads???

pedestrian was waiting to cross... I couldn't see him/her at all as the traffic on my right lane is packed with cars and my car it's fairly low. So the right lane stopped and the car in front of me suddenly decided to stop last second. So...

my front black bumper had minor scratches, but the white rear bumper of the lady's car in front had a lot of black marks. It was dark so I wasn't sure if there's any dent. Hopefully not. I was wondering if I was to settle by cash, does anyone know what a fair price will be to pay?

Coz I don't want an estimate from a bodyshop that's like 2k+ for a minor damage. You know that can happen from those quoting place.

Depending on what kind of car she drives a new bumper cover and paint can cost anywhere from $500-1000.

Unless it's an old POS.

Well unfortunately the only way to accurately judge is to see it in person. I recommend you ask her to go to a body shop that is more on the honest side.

Even if she wanted $1000 for a new bumper, I would pay it if it keeps the insurance company out of it.

halfer
if theirs just scratches you may have to just pay to have it sprayed so is should be a $300 tops with somebody work

icydude
when i got backed into at a friday night meet the quotes were 950- 1500 to paint the rear bumper and realign it.

so if there is bumper damage underneith then i wouldnt want to see the bill

A guy here at work went through the same thing -- the front bumper on his 2001 Civic was quoted at $800 for a brand new bumper cover along with matching the paint/installation. $400 for the bumper cover itself, $400 for paint/installation/alignment - this was quoted by a good shop too, so I'm sure it's cheaper elsewhere.

So I would say that is reasonable price - I'm sure you could get it done for less since that's using a brand new Honda bumper, and the body work is being done by a good shop.

Don't be fooled. I hit a minivan just after an intersection one time and I didn't think much of her van, it had 5 if not less little paint scratches on the bumper so I figured I'd just pay her and be done with it. Well I found out it's some "special" fuckin bumper and it ended up costing $2000 to fix, the damage was hidden inside, it fuckin blew hardcore.

I was lucky, I paid $250 cash... your numbers scared me, but I believe ya...!

no dent in the bumper, only scratches. she told me a rough $250 verbal estimate, and asked if I wanted some paper proof. And I said no, I'll pay you now and got my release paper... I won't be driving on that lane again going to work. And I'll always remember every pedestrian intesection!

i think there might have been some black ice that i couldn't see. I did slid so much. wonder if abs would have helped.

You can still lock the wheels up with ABS but its basically like pumping your brakes 10 times in a second which you just can't do with your feet. Some tests have shown ABS to actually be worse on snow and ice compared to cadence braking.

Wow, you got very lucky. A lady rear ended my civic one time and I made her buy a whole new rear bumper, cost her 1k for the bumper and paint and instalation. and turned out she lives 6 houses down from me to the left.
Its hard to pay attention all the time when you drive, but in winter just try to keep alot of distence between you and any other cars.
