in the process of getting rx7 - Click HERE for Original Thread

Well i pretty much have my first rotary and i am wondering what are the first things to do to the car to make it more reliable.

i heard a guy built a switch that would turn off the fuel pump this worked great for accidental floods and anti theft device, does this sound good?

i also want to switch to 91 octane and i am wondering if i can just start adding it or if i should some how empty the tank first?

would a turbo timer help with flooding and heat related turbo problems?

what are the weak points of an 86 rx7 turbo that i should work on 1st?

>oil
>spark
>grounding
>tuning
>fuel delivery
>rotors
>intercooler

let me know as i am planning on pampering my baby

Wookey
Well my first question is:

Is it a jdm car? or is a a USDM car with a turbo swap cause USDM cars never came turbo in 86.

Second you can pretty much just go straight to using 91 octane or higher.

Generally its like any other turbo car for maintenance wise. Check plugs, change oil often, make sure you have a good rad cause Rotary + too much heat = death.

Before you go and start moding your car you have to make sure you have the supporting mods. If you are gonna up the boost, make sure you atleast have a Fuel Cut Defender and a fuel pump.

Theres alot more but we are here to help so if you have any questions, ask away.

yea i really dont want to go with more hp yet. i just want to make it super reliable and fun to drive, so would an aftermarket rad and 91 octane be a good choice then to start?

and from what i am told i dont know what the exact engine code yet but its a fresh jdm turbo engine swap with 63000k

Everything is here!

And why pay more for slower burning gas? For performance, you want the lowest octane rating you can use with out detonation. For any stock FC that would be 87. Also, stay away from Mohawk/Husky ethanol bend. It seems to cause problems with the rotarys.

Unless it's Turbo.

heh thats where i have been reading most of everything, is rx7store good with ta and customer service?

If you make it out to a RX-7 Club meeting (next one 7:30pm Jan 3rd Park Mazda), you can see have some other FC owners are doing & figure out what you want to do.

Switching radiators, putting a fuel kill switch & a turbo timer in are all good ways to improve reliability. As far as everything else, in my opinion keeping it as close to stock as possible increases reliability. The team that designed it were university educated in automotive design & among the best in that field. It's hard to do a whole lot better than them without spending big $$$. Just my opinion though.

awesome i would like to see what everyone else is doing with there 7, yea i am going to look up some different rads the koyo one sounds pretty good for not too bad of a price.

anyone have any shops they want to recommmend?

ozzmodan
I've heard good things about Abbey Road & Ottewell Automotive (I think everyone there does/did own an RX) plus as a RX7 club member you would get 10% off both places.

zerro
check out ebay for those rads..and also before u do anything...check the engine comp test..

start off with basics and then u can alway improve on that..

first things i would do is check all the plugs and wires and then exhaust.then the cooling and then tuning...

Keep in mind that the Internet is an unfiltered source of information.
There is both good & absolutely worthless information on it.

Any kind of boost, especially with a rotary engine, requires a high octane to help prevent detonation.

The amount of power ANY engine would achieve by using a lower octane over a higher one is minimal at best.
Same goes for an engine that uses low octane but the owner puts in higher octane, it does nothing to benefit the engine.
Doesn't burn cleaner, doesn't give more power, doesn't make your dick harder, Nothing.

I stock lots of used and new rx7 parts.

OEM and Aftermarket.

Congrats on choosing the rx7 platform, its one decision I'll never regret.
