Legal way to change gauge cluster? - Click HERE for Original Thread

I've always wondered how you legally change your entire gauge cluster. The odometer of course wont match, so how do you go about doing it legally?

as far as i know... the only people that "should" do it is the dealer. You keep the old cluster for when you sell the car. So then, u show the potential buyer the odometer reading on both clusters creating your grand total in mileage. Technically, if your odometer froze, i guess you can get some "free" mileage until you decide to put in the new cluster.

i heard that if you replace your cluster all you have to do is write down the old milage on a sticker in the door jam so it can be added when you sell the car.

I've heard that you can take the new cluster to a certain shop that will adjust your new cluster to your current mileage reading and do the legal paperwork for you. I read it on a website I found but it could have been in the US. This would probably be the best way to go if we could do this here.

Hi n0c7,

When you replace your gauge cluster just insert the old odometer into the new cluster. There are usually 2 screws holding the odometer into the cluster. When I did the cluster swap on my B13 Sentra that is exactly what I did. That way the mileage is still the same. I needed to switch it anyhow as the one I purchased read in mph. I had installed a cluster with a factory tach. Hopefully your switch is simple and is plug and play. Mine was not. I needed to sever my harness and rewire everything to the cluster.

Hope this helps,

Mike Nikolai

Fortunately Mike, I don't have to do the swap. I was just curious as to what the proper procedure was.

I changed the cluster in my old civic. I changed it with one from an Si so that I would have a factory tach. When I sold the car I wrote down "unknown" for the odometer reading. I think this is legal. I also told the buyer an honest approximation of the mileage.

The few shops I've talked to about this follow this procedure with the sticker.

I changed the cluster on my Neon (because I wanted one with a tach) and it dropped the mileage some 94k kms. (It's really easy to change the cluster on a Neon, so I did it myself). I took a picture of the old and new clusters (showing the mileage) and wrote a letter to Alberta Transport. I sent the pictures with the letter.

Basically, I just said to them: "To Whom It May Concern, I've changed the odometer on my car (VIN #blah blah blah) and it has reduced the odometer reading by 94k kms. Please put an indication of this on the registration records for this vehicle."

I got a letter back from them saying "thanks for letting us know. Please inform the next buyer of the car of this change when you sell the car."

So, now I have an official document proving that I didn't try to hide this. I wanted to cover my butt, because if I sell the car, and tell the next buyer, there's no guarantee that they won't turn around and sell the car again without telling the next owner. I don't want anything coming back on me, if they were to find out I did the change.

With some newer cars the milage is actually stored in the ecu and the cluster. My wife's cluster failed, they popped a new one in, flashed the cluster with the info from the ecu and it was like it was never changed.

I just found a used one. Had 5k less km. Went from 56,000 to 51,000 lol.
