What's new with tires? Help me decide. - Click HERE for Original Thread

JustinL
I'm looking for tires for a 17X9" wheel. I've got a set of fuzions and I'm pretty happy with them in a smaller size. I'm curious though what else is out there in a similar price range. If they made Azenis in my size I'd be all over them, but they don't.

The size I'm looking for is 255/40/17 or something of similar diameter (25.0").

Toyo Proxes T1-R @ Fastech Performance Tire Centres (westend or southside) -- obviously, summer only!

What are you planning to do with them, what price range ?

JustinL
Autocross, street, summer only. I'm willing to pay more to get more, but I'm not so sure that all tires follow this principle, hence the thread to see what people are recommending. I'm willing to sacrifice tread life for grip up to a point; I don't want r-compounds that I can't drive on the street.

Tell me more about the T1-R sounds like a definite option!

Also, it seems that the azenis rt-615, comes in my size (I'm not sure why the falken website doesn't show them...). Anyone try these tires yet? They are the update from the 215 correct?

I find my Yokohama AVSES100's to hold up fine in the corners and on the strip.

I'm looking at the Hankook r-s2 z212's right now, the seem to be good performance for the money.

My next tires... I am using Azenis 615's right now and they are so so... I liked the older 215's much better..

Not to put too fine a point of contention to their list, but C&D's 10 best list has been shot full of holes on numerous web forums and such. Basically, any shoot out by C&D, R&T, and MT is baseless.

Tires were not allowed to be driven enough to take off the mould release compound (affected a few of the brands). Tires were not played with for pressure - they all ran the same or near same. Etc...

I have the same rubber and would recommend them as well.

i have the azenis 215's and they're awesome in the dry, but HORRIBLE in any amount of rain. However, the 615's are supposed to be a lot better in the rain. If you like hydroplaining, try finding some 215's

The Eagle F1's are good for a while... but once they get a little wear on them they get greasy as hell when they're hot.

255's are going to be a bit narrow on a 9" rim... why not run a 275? :dunno:

My next tires are going to be BFG KDW2s, 295s out back, 275s up front.

I can't find any tires bigger than 255 that maintain the propper circumference. I also want to be able to run the same size tire at all 4 corners and I know I can fit a 255/40/17 on the front... though it's pretty tight.

My car is really only used for cruising on dry days and autocross/lapping events. I'm not especially concerned with wet weather performance as I can switch to my narrower wheels if need be.

Right now, I'm feeling the draw of a set of azenis tires now that they make reasonable sizes :) What kinds of tires compete with the Falkens? Are the Hankooks as sticky?
