Exhaust system/sound - Click HERE for Original Thread

siopao
which exhaust/muffler system is the best out there? best performance/brand??? best sound??? (preferably a deep firm tone)

test
Depends on which car I guess. For Civics I would recommend:
- Apexi Dunk
- Apexi N1
- 5Zigen Fireball
Those will definately give you a nice throaty tone. they're not cheap though.

Other things to consider...
- what other mods do you have? If you run or plan on a turbo then you need a much larger diameter pipe.
- Low end torque, NA cars like a bit of backpressure. Many aftermarket mufflers take the low end out of cars and move it to the top. You may see your max hp gain, but you'll lose some down low.
- Quite honestly, the biggest difference from an exhaust upgrade is from the sound, not the power. You may think its faster but really, can you feel max 5 hp at such a narrow rpm band?
- Watch out for systems that drone at certain RPM's
- Sometime cheap knock off exhaust systems will blow out the glass from the mufflers. It will sound horrible after that.
- your cat will also effect the sound. Will you be running one?

thinking about replacing the whole cat-back... i dunno how pricey it will get tho...

siopao
say what???

Well like GAPS mentioned.. really depends on the car. So what car specifically would hte exhasut be put onto?
I know that the SLP Loudmouth exhasut is the deepest sounding exhaust available for a GrandPrix. With this thing on your car sounds like a v8! No joke.

siopao
oh.. so sorry... kinda got confused there for a sec...
the car i want it installed in is a 5th gen prelude... got any suggestions?

smooth
My favorite has to be the Mugen.
check this out:
http://www.alltel.net/~gg95948/clips/Mugen1.wav
Its nice and mellow, but deep during idle, but once you rev it, it screams!

siopao
mugen... yeah those are good... but costs so much...

Luong98
Ya, Mugen would be the best. If you got the cash I would highly recommend to get it. I dont usually favor Mugen too much, because I think they are over priced. Unless you are planning on going FI I would get the Mugen exhaust and header. Jackson Racing have a design similar to the double loop of the Mugen exhaust. I dont know if they make it for the BB6 or even if they are any good.
Otherwise, any brand name exhaust gives out pretty much the same horse power rating. It just depends on your style and sound you want. I like the Tanabe G-Power. The Apex-i RS is probably one of the quitier ones. Any of the straight pipe will give out a loud sound, like Apex-i N1, Tanabe Racing Medalion, and 5Zigen Fireball.

brandon
Does anyone know what it lops back? Sounds like an exercise in restriction.

Luong98
Check out www.kingmotorsports.com .There's a diagram. The double loop dampers sound vibration that most catback usually creates. I dont know exactly the dynamics behind it, but amazingly the Mugen exhaust produces the most power compared to most other aftermarket exhaust.
(Edited by Luong98 at 12:48 pm on Aug. 10, 2001)

REFLUX

It's alot harder to get power out of Japanese cars, than say Camaro's/Vettes.
I paid &#36995 installed, tax in for my Greddy exhaust. Felt a difference, but it's not a night and day difference.
How much are you willing to spend? Just remember, you get what you pay for.:)

siopao
spend possibly around &#361200..
i also heard the apexi N1's are great... what's your guys' input on that?

N1 exhaust is great, but it also has great sound, it's too loud in my opinion, but if you don't mind that, then it's fine. I know guys that have to wear earplugs just to tolerate the sound on long trips.

siopao
really ####.. is there anyway to "dampen" the sound?

No kidding. Nothing worst than a car with loud exhaust. I don't care if its a 12 sec Honda, it's just #### rude to have a loud exhaust. Couple of Celica's and stangs at the import challenge were stupid loud.
(Edited by icon at 1:23 pm on Aug. 14, 2001)

The N1 is great, although I don't know if there will be any 'rubbing' if your car is lowered, since the exhaust does sit a bit on the low side.
It is sorta loud, but it wont kill your eardrums.:) Just get a silencer if you want to cut down on the noise.
If you like that particular 'N1' style, check out the 5Zigen Fireball and Tanabe Racing Medallion.
I'm pretty sure you can get the full exhaust and silencer with your budget.
Good luck.

siopao
i was talking to my friend and he told me that the 5zigen fireball isn't that great... i wouldn't really know tho.

CRXguy
It's all about preference really. Just go with whatever you like best.

Luong98
Siopao I have a the Prelude as well. Dont get the Fireball. It's crap. You wont gain alot.

siopao
hmmm.. n1's i heard were good.. gotta read up on DCsports and possibly a GReddy...
luong: what exhaust system u have installed?

wazzup
I'm running an RSR exhaust system on my 98 civic HB. _It's got a nice deep tone to it, not to loud tho.

Too bad Racing Beat stopped importing RSR products into the states.

CRXguy
I'd highly recommend the Greddy......they are quiet during idle and during normal driving. It's only loud when you get on the throttle, which is why I got it. So cops don't harass you and shit like that.

I got quoted &#36830 for an RSR catback in January, when I was shoppin' around. Don't know if the guy still carries it though.

CRX Guy, who is this guy that imports RSR products? If you still have the number/e-mail, I would like to contact him/her.

wazzup

siopao

Alpha Gangsta
If you guys want good prices on equipment and you don;t already have a good deal hooked up somewhere else then try Pro Drag performance and talk to Fred. Its really hard to beat the prices there. I've checked around for prices for a couple of things and Freds got the best for all of them. if you're intrested Email me.
