Hi there, I was wondering if those license plate covers you can pick up at canadian tire are illegal? i had one on my truck and a special constible, was visiting at my house and told me if i leave my driveway with that on, he'll give me a ticket, so i went out and smashed it, but now my registration stickers are peeling off. My dad is a retired RCMP, and he says there ok, as long as they are kept clean, which i wash my truck several times a week. I would rather pay for a cover then keep buying stickers.
If any one can help, it would be much appriciated
thx |

Here's what the Motor Vehicle Administration Act says about licence plates being visible.
Legibility of licence plates:
Section 53(1) The operator of a motor vehicle or trailer shall at all times keep any licence plate required to be attached to the vehicle secured in a manner and maintained in a condition so as to be clearly visible and readable and unobscured by any part of the vehicle or its attachments or load or otherwise.
What this means is those fancy 3D covers that scramble the letters at an angle (photo radar busters) are illegal. As far as the plain plastic covers ... they are okay as it is kept continually clean. Don't go too dark on the tint because then you get into the officer's opinion of whether or not the plate is obscured. What you have to remember is if the plate gets covered w/ mud most times you can still see the letters / numbers as they are raised. When you put a flat plastic cover overtop of the plate & the cover gets splattered w/ mud ... that takes away any chance of being readable. Here's a neat little story ... I actually seen someone who forgot (or was too lazy) to remove the plastic cover & they put the new sticker right on the cover ... who'd a thunk it??
Anther thing a lot of people don't think of ... those nice plate frames look really cool but when they cover over the date stickers be ready to be stopped by an officer to determine the expiry date (you also may want to have a screwdriver closeby to remove the frame).
Jimbo  |

| what about those anti photo sprays you can get.. is there anyway that a cop can catch you with that kind of thing in place ? |

The sprays are transparent and rest on top of the plate and does not conceal it is any way.
Even if it did, you would still be able to see the raised letters on the plate.
So, according the 53(1) you should be ok :) |
