Has anyone had any experience selling a car to someone in the United States? If so, what's involoved when doing it? Any information, websites, experiences, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

I think my uncle told me( He lives in the U.S) that when selling a car to a different country it is not the sellers job to do anything but sell it. The Buyer is responsible to get it inspected and have everything check out right. So your pretty much just selling it like any other car!

yup what wookey said is true... the buyer is repsonisble for pick-up, papers, getting it us inspected, etc. all you do is sell it and put it on a train

We move lots of trucks south here at work. As the guys above me said, as the seller you don't have to worry about anything. You are simply selling a vehicle "as is". You don't care where it goes.

The only thing you have to worry about is that for the most part you are not allowed to sell a vehicle to someone taking it out of Canada if the vehicle is less than 6 months old (for most brands) or even 12 months for Mercedes and some other high-end cars. Check with the dealerships about penalties and the particular rules with each manufacturer. If the car is older though, you don't have to worry about any of that.

The only other consideration is that if you are selling as a company with a GST # and you are not charging GST (because they are from the US) you have to make sure that you get export papers to prove the vehicle did indeed enter the US. Otherwise if you get audited, CCRA will force you to pay the GST and I'm willing to bet you will have a tough time collecting it back from the guy you sold the vehicle too. ;)

Thanks for all the info guys, that helps alot. Just so you guys know, it is a private sale for my prelude that you guys see in my signature. I was just wondering, what's the best way to arrange the payments in this situation? Do they pay first then I ship? It's hard to trust someone that you've never met. Thanks again.

Get them to pay you first. Get signed document and all the shiat before you send it! DONT GET SCREWED OVER!

Our rule here at work is that the wire/cheque needs to be in the in out bank before we hand over the keys. How are you sending the car down? Is someone driving it down?

WookeysRX7
And make sure if they write you a check that its a CERTIFIED CHECK from the bank!

I'm not exactly sure yet, I guess I'll find out tonight. I think they will be shipping it down there.
