im not gonna take it out..someone with experience will swap it out... i figured it was so im not gonna o forth with it...im gonna sell the hub and wheel....need money anyways....

It is illegal to put a custom sterring wheel with an airbag equiped car, the way they can tell is when they look at your serial numkber on the top of your dashboard they will of put an SRS writing right below or beside your vin, some cars dont have it, like my old 93 civic it has an airbag but it doesnt have the srs beside the vin, 95% of the cars out their have the SRS beside their vin on their dash

REFLUX
airbags (used with seatbelts) can save lives
i wouldn't tamper with it no matter HOW ugly the steering wheel is

& Alias81, i know how ugly those integra steering wheels are :P

dogstar
as far as i remember it IS illegal to remove any safety device from a roadgoing vehicle.

this means seatbelts in an occupied seating position, or airbags, or dash padding, among other things.

ManHunter
Yep, I'm pretty sure it's illegal to do that, unless there is a valid medical reason for it.

What kind of wheel do you have? Just curious?!

Oh and all three of my cars haven't had airbags... I'm not sure if I'm thankful or not... I'm sure they'd break my glasses and blind me.... so?!

Who cares if it's illegal, I'm sure if you don't drive like an asshole you won't get pulled over and won't get a ticket for it.... I would have to say, that you should decide whether your airbag is worth removing or not?! Eat a leather wheel or eat an airbag that deploys at like 200km/h?

dogstar
chris, an airbag wont bust your glasses or blow your teeth outa your mouth

and its not whether youll get pulled over and checked for it, its when you have an accident and the insurance inspector notices youve got no airbag and the questions start.

ALIAS81
thanks for the info guys. final decision... as nice as it would be to replace the oem wheel, im gonna keep it in. never really thought that it would be a problem cause ive seen numerous cars do it. i dont drive like an idiot anymore but knowing my luck and the attraction my car gets from cops, im gonna play it safe. anybody wanna buy a steering wheel and hub for an integra?? hahaa

redbaron303
What kind of wheel?

an airbag will break your glasses and poosibly take out a couple of teeth, i would know those airbags are powerful muther*****s we blow the off for fun at work

Last week I had a crash tester for Transport Canada come to my office and give a little informal presentation on their testing. We were discussing the affects of disabling air bags. What I gathered from him is:

Modern day occupant restraint systems are designed to work as a whole. That is, air bags and seat belts work together, and do not function properly alone.

Seat belts today are not designed to keep you from hitting the dash/wheel, they are designed to place the body in a position where the air bag will work effectively.

He showed us a video of a frontal collision where the airbags were disabled, and I'll tell you... the dummy ate dash and wheel as a result of this.

I would highty recommend against any modification of safety equipment in your car.

02SiR, where do you work that they let you set off airbags? That's an expensive bit of fun.

'02SiR
at black gold import auto parts in nisku, when we over stock on airbags for the same car we dont keep them, so we go outside hook the negative up and the positve, then boom that shit is 100ft in the air, and their real loud when they explode

damn you crazeeeeeeee chemists.... ahaha, osama you're nuts!

So from what I gather from this post is that you can't modify any safety equipment.... so a 4 or 5 point seat belt and racing seats while using airbags IS illegal even though it is probably safer.. or is it safer?

Loose
IMO added safety equipement, like 4-5 point harnesses are better under one circumstance!: That they are properly installed!

I've seen many ghetto rigged seats and belts. Make sure they are installed properly.

That's for sure.... you don't want to ghetto rig your seat and safety belts.... seat belts! I would switch my steering wheel in a new car w/ srs but at the same time I would be switchin the seat and seatbelts.... the 4/5 point harness that is properlly mounted and a real good seat, and you probably won't end up loosing teeth on your custom wheel... somebody mentioned that the new seat belts aren't designed to stop yuo from hitting the wheel but rather slow the impact into the airbag.....That means that my old car w/out airbag has seatbelts taht are there to STOP me right....!? Seems logical, although sometimes thing just don't work that! I plan on buying a Momo wheel this summer ----> 84 NIssan w/out airbags and that means it's not illegal or a safety concern then right (if installed properlly)?

You got it. The rule of thumb for vehicle modifications is you cannot take away any safety device that is built into a vehicle. You can modify equipment to an increased level of safety such as 4 & 5 point harnesses as long as they are installed properly (as a lot of you have mentioned ... good job!!). If anyone wants to modify their vehicle & they're wondering if it's legal ... call & ask your local detachment / station but ensure you speak w/ a member up on all of the equipment laws (otherwise please don't ask your brother's ex-wife's cousin's step-father twice removed who happens to be a retired member who spent the past 20 years in homocide!!).

Jimbo

black5speed
ok.. so if I was to replace my stock seats that have airbags built into them for a aftermarket seat with a 4 or 5 point harness(installed properly of course) .. that would be.... illegal? or legal?

turbomike
you can not use a 5 point harness on the road... unless it is stock...
i took out the stock belts on my sprint what did i get a ticket for seatbelt vio...

also airbags work fine without seat belts... you just hit them harder i was in my sisters grand marques when a chick blew a light, poof i had a hed on at 60kph without my seat belt... like landing in a crash mat at a gym on your face... i walked away without a scratch but man did my face hurt...

O ya i now use a seatbelt even when i driving a ford grand marques...

I would say that the addition of a 4 or 5 point seatbelt and race seat in any car would actually make it less safe! Imagine if you ever rolled your car, what do you think would happen to your head when your roof line suddenly becomes 6 inches shorter, and your body cant slump over because your tightly secured to your seat. Basically the only way a 4/5 point harness is safer than a 3 point is if you install a roll cage, and even then you MUST properly pad the bars that your head/arms, may come in contact with in the event of a crash. That's my opinion.

black5speed
wouldn't it be the same with a 3 point harness... because on impact the seatbelt would lock and my body wouldn't be able to slump anyway..... but if it's illegal to put it in then I won't.... I'll just reapolster my seats.

no you can slump in a stock 3point

Those airbags have alot of force behind them. That's why little kids in a passenger seat (passenger airbags) can be killed. I was at NAIT to find out about Automotive Mechanic Apprenticeship and they set an airbag off. It was louder then several guns I've shot and a screen was needed to stop anything from hitting the spectators, just in case.

Yah, i've heard the same thing from more then once person.

Albertarc: so is it at the descretion of the officer to issue the ticket in this case?

reeskm
Leave your airbags working.

Why? I was in Germany on holiday this last August and was in an Audi. It was totaled when a Lorry truck hit us in a head on collision at 50 kph. We all walked away with only bruises, except me, cause i was in the back where there were no airbags! The force of the seatbelt during impact broke my collar bone :)

Oh, and no, I don't need any plastic surgery and neither did the guys in the front :)

----

Cops can basically write you up for anything if they want to. They basically have a rule book and even the most law abiding citizen probably doesn't realize that even a tiny bit of snow by your plate qualifies as a ticket for license plate obstruction. *Anything* hanging from your rear view mirror is always a front windshield obstruction... The list goes on.

So, in summary, always be polite with the coppers and don't do anything stupid, and they'll most likely let you go with a warning. Worked for me to avoid an exhaust ticket! :)

Tyangelo
It really depends on the vehicle. If I was to have stock seats in my truck, I would have kept the airbag in. However, running a 5 point system, I aint going anywheres when I hit anything, so an airbag would be pointless. I had to make my own adapter for my wheel for my truck, and then had to weld the steering wheel to the adapter, because Grant doesn't make a kit for my truck. Tons of fun... I would say, if you are going to upgrade your restraining harnesses, then go ahead, otherwise don't touch em.

SilverFire
My old roommate got a seatbelt ticket with a 4 pt harness. What the judge said was that the rules say "Transport Canada approved" not any safety spec, so in theory, if a 4 or 5 pt harness has a TC sticker/tag/etc. it would be ok. Unfortunately, most haven't been checked.

Tyangelo
Well, do your best to not get caught. If it means enough to you, demeritless tickets are considered to me a driving expense
