WTF, old lady yells at me for talking on cell in public area - Click HERE for Original Thread

REFLUX
Ok so I'm in a public computer lab at the Students' Union Building on campus, there are about 5 other people in the lab with me.

I get a call on my cell and talk like any normal person does on it.

Lady behind me, probably mid-40s and didn't grow up with technology, scolds me saying, "You know, SOME people are trying to get some studying done here!"

A few minutes later she leaves and I tell her that she should go to a quiet level in a library to study.
It seems like she doesn't understand.
"You know on this campus, there are libraries and in those libraries there are specific levels where it has to be completely silent. You should go there to do work."

Then she goes off about how cell phones are the #1 annoyance of all people and how it's inconsiderate to use them indoors.
That cell phones should be used outdoors.

What is this? Smoking?
Is my cellphone made by Marlboro & duMaurier?
Does it give off intoxicating & highly addictive fumes when transmiting its signals?
Does it cause 2nd-hand-radiation-cancer?

Give me a fucking break!

It's a damn PUBLIC area.
It wasn't like I was screaming my ass off, it was just normal level talking.

Another guy in the lab tells me after the cranky bitch left that he just got yelled at for talking on his cell when standing in line at SUBWAY.
You should hear how damn loud it is at the food court, what's the problem with 1 person talking into a cell phone?

I mean holy shit, this is supposed to be an ACADEMIC insitution, you'd THINK that the people in its attendance wouldn't be so closed minded.

No wonder I've lost hope in humanity.
We're just all so...so.....STUPID!!!!

agreed. People as a whole seem to be getting dumber, not their intelligence levels specifically, but their actions, things they say, etc.

And some people ask me why i don't go out much anymore, i don't feel like getting in an arguement or fight over something stupid.

Being a hermit doesn't sound like such a bad thing the more you think about it.

Well Terry, maybe she had a problem with the drug trade/prostitution ring that you're running with your cell phone. There are people out there that actually believe that most poeple with cell phones are involved in criminal activities.

So the question is. What are YOU doing that's illegal Terry?

BlueTurboEGG
Situations like that is most likely the reason why people who can, should carry a bicycle horn...

You know the kind:

Moments like that I'd turn around and go do the "honkee-honkee" and continue about my business like nothing happened.

boarderfatty
I dont think you deserved crap for that, but i know that at the G Mac Learning Resource Center (library) they have signs all over saying no cellphones even in the areas that arent quiet zones, maybe you have them but didnt notice? Idont know, but i do believe people and cellphones are getting outta hand in some situations. Working as a teller in a bank and in retail people seem to have no respect, not giving anyone the time of day and expecting everything from them, or you hear someone using them in public washrooms. There are some places and times when you shoul not use a cellphone, you think they would realize it. Maybe there needs to be some guidelines set in place

SketchifisT
If it strictly says no cell phones then sure, but people are just getting irritated by them and takin out there frustration on other people. Like i got yelled at , while i was payin for something at the mall, i was like Look buddy the money is in my hand i can multy task , im sorry you cant but if you want the 5 seconds you lost from me answering my cell phone , i suggest you run to the door to make up the time. I swore he was going to drop me but i think he was still takin in what i said and by that time iwas gone.

Dont worry about it terry people are just frustratingly stupid now a days. gluck if you run into her again

Insomniac
terry, shouldn't use your cell phone in a lab you inconsiderate smuck! you racist bastard!

DomesticDrifter
next time tell her to jump off a bridge.... then throw rice at her.... had o be said because of Insoms. comment

REFLUX
Yeah there are NO signs in that lab about cell phones.
It's not even a lab, it's a room with computers in it.

There are student lounges, services, a radio station, etc in that area so it is for sure not a "quiet area."
There isn't even an unspoken "quiet rule" for that room.

People play news & sports broadcasts, videos, messenger, etc.

Bottom line is that her comment was unjustified and just made her look all the more ignorant.

kyuu
Open up a can of Shaq-fu on her and let the fun begin

POX
the UofA is full of wack jobs...

There is only one thing that seprates a crazy person talking to himself and someone on a cell phone, the phone.

I was raised to respect thoes around you. when ever i get a call, even in my house i go where i wont be desterbing other people. This is how text messaging came about. in China, talking on a phone in a plublic place was very rude, so they developted text messanging.

Have some respect for others and what they are doing. i cant stand someone blabing on there phone 3x louder then they need to be.

SilverNeonRacer
I talk on the cell if need be, but say I get a call right before I'm going to a till, or in line, I'll twit the phone back, so I can still hear the phone call, but I'll acknowledge the cashier, or whomever, ya know, show some respect. Say hi and such.

I try to keep my voice as low as possible, but still have the person ont he other side still hear me when I'm in a public place.

The thing that bugs me about cell phones, is in Hospitals and such, where there are signs, say turn themoff, not just don't use them, turn them off.

When I got to the hospital, I either leave the phone in the car, or turn t off.

REFLUX
As I said, it is a public place.
It was at normal conversation level.

In Chinese culture there is also a strong mentality of "Mind your own business" that has been around for centuries before text messaging.

And honestly, manners in 1 culture cannot be generalized to another culture.
Did you know that in China, constant eye contact is a sign of aggression and is considered very rude?
So what, Chinese people are excused of ill-mannered conduct when they visit North America? Hell no.

If someone has a problem with the way society is, there are a few options for them:
1) Put up with it.
2) Go to another society.
3) Kill yourself.

As for respecting what others are doing, same can be said to the crazy lady.
Couldn't she have respectfully asked me to take my call outside?
What justification did she have to scold me in a condescending manner?

It would have been my pleasure to vacate the area if she simply said:
"Sorry to interupt but would it be alright if you took your call outside? I have some important studying to do for an upcoming exam."

If someone is going to start arguing with a total stranger because of something petty like this, how will they survive in this society?
Such conduct is utterly ridiculous and outlandish.

Another effective form of action she could have taken was for HER to leave.
For HER to realize that she was in a public place with NO noise prohibition signs and for HER to realize that there are SPECIALIZED places that are designed for low levels of noise and distraction.

Why should I leave a place that caters specifically to my needs and not hers?

That's like telling a guy in the next bathroom stall to shut his asshole and go to another washroom because his shit stinks too much.
If you got a problem with stinky shit in a place built purposefuly for SHITTING, then you're the one who has the problem.
If you can't realize that a SHITTER is made for SHITTING, then either you're a person without an opinion/asshole or you are too ignorant to realize that it is YOU who are in the wrong place and it is YOU who should shut YOUR hole and go shit somewhere else.

Silverneonracer:
I agree, it seems silly to me when people are supposed to engage in person to person contact as a priority but instead they take a call.
And people who use cell phones in hospitals are that much worse.
I guess there is a risk of interference with sensitive electronics at the hospital, so why would someone want to put another person at risk?
In a scenario as that, scolding would be totally justified.

chris f
How would you feel if someone was talking while you were trying to wach a movie?
How about a teacher singing along to their cd player while your doing a test?
Sitting in you car while there is hog blasting his straight pipes at your car while you have your windows down?

All of these are anoying, and so is someone talking on a cell phone, i cant stand people chating and not giving the respect of others around them, talking while they are buying somthing, driving. and the other person on the phone with them, if im on the phone with someone elese and i hear them talking to anther person, trying to do two things at once, i hang up and wait for them to call back, it rude and so is talking on a cell phone infront of other people

my opinion is that a person is smart, put people in general are stupid. they hear one thing from someone else and take it as fact or a should-be fact and run with it..

Kinda like when companies call you, Like:

HI, this is so and so came I speak to joe?

Yeah this is Joe.

Ok great, blah blah, Oh can you hold please?

If I call people I try to gove them y almost undevided attention, aka at home, I go in to a back room so my wife playing her games won't disturb the call.

But is somebody calls me, they better acknowledge I might be doing something else atm. A couple weeks ago, I was changing my neighbours signal bulbs, and I got a call, I took the call, kept working on the light while talking, and I made it clear I was multitasking.

As far as the movies, or the singing teacher - those are instances whewr quiet is expected, shoot most theaters have signs saying no phones.

As far as the hog goes.... I find it worse when it's a 4x4 diesel and hit exhaust is pointing right in my window. Jack shit you can do, I just roll up the window, or roll back or forward a bit.

Mekanik22
WTF Terry? That lady has a screw loose or something! I would have told her to lick a nut and continued talking on my phone.

Just like at the fuckin car show. I was walking out and some old fat guy runs right into me for NO reason then I look back and he starts nodding his head like it was my fault?! So I said to him "You know, don't TRY and move or anything, that would be too much work. I forgive you though, but only because your fat and you can't help it." and he just kept walking. I'm just an ass to people who deserve it. Get mad Terry, tell someone like that off, you'll feel good

midnite
it sounds like she was being more disrespectful than you were.

'excuse me, SOME of us are trying to have a conversation here'

ChromeDragon
You should have asked the person you were talking to to hang up and call back. When you answer, offer the phone and say it's for her. Tell her that it's the tree in her backyard calling and it wants the stick she has up her ass returned immediately.:p

Wolfdio
What i would have done is said "I can kill in public, but i cant talk on a phone? cmon!" She'll probably reply "You can't kill in public, people will see you!" then I'd say "Never stopped me" but maybe i should stop turning an argument into a joke/threat

snugs
lol, that kind of thing would never happen if you just stopped answering your cell by yelling "WAZZZZZZZZZZZZZZUUUUUUUUUUUP", its so 1997. :p

j/k ....don't know why the old bird was so cranky, but how did this thread go from cell phones to a random rant about poo? :dunno:

If you weren't being loud and obnoxious, then I see no problem with talking on your phone. It's like talking to someone else in the same room. There's nothing rude about conversation.

The computer lab in SUB is definitely not a quiet area, so she's got no right to complain, much less yell at you.

That is exactly where I was :)

snugs:
idunno, poo is just such a useful topic for analogies and various topics

Cody:
ahhhaha good on you man!
I would've paid good money to have been there when you said that

Matt:
Wish I could've thought that up at the time!

chris f:
what 1 person believes to be rude obviously differs from others but what I think is quite universal in North American manners is something called Tolerance.
There are plenty of annoyances in this society but we tolerate it.
Bad driving, stinky poo, lip smacking, not holding doors for other people, etc.
People don't just go about yelling & scolding random people because they feel like it or because they are annoyed.

For an unknown person to show no signs of restraint and just do as they wish, say what they want to another person...that is poor mannered.
As I said in my lengthier post, there are many better options that she could have taken.
She chose to take the negative way, that's too bad for her.
Says more about her lack of character than anything else.

Charles_00civic
When I study at SUB I get pissed if people talk loud. I guess they have a right to though. lol. I just like the smell of subway while I study. Plus I can listen to frat stories from acorss the room.

You know what pisses me off? When it's like 1am and I'm studying in SUB, in the study space just outside of the Alumni Room...these group of ridiculously loud arab 1st year retards will run around screaming like a bunch of monkeys. Since it's so late, everyone else there is quietly studying while these fuckers e-thug each other in real life (yes, it's possible) talking about how they all drive $60,000 SUVs or some shit. Apparently half those fuckers don't even go to the U of A...They don't seem to notice when everyone gives them stares and people regularly ask them to quiet down.

When I told them to STFU, they started whining about how it's a cafeteria (no it's not, this isn't highschool) and how I should go into the quiet room (no, it's understood that this is a quiet area since everyone is being quiet)...then when the chump runs out of highschoolesque excuses, he starts calling me faggot...except he said it like "fuuhhhhggit!"

I hope those shitheads drop out soon.

Aaaahhh the good ol first year losers that end up wasting a year of their life and costing mom and dad tuition fees. Don't worry they end up going to NAIT to take business or end up going to Marvel to study hair dressing.

redbaron303
Cell phones are a part of modern, north american (and world) life.... Many many people use them on a daily basis.

It's no more rude to answer your cell phone in a public area than it to have a conversation with someone sitting right next to you. I believe this to be true so long as you're still respectful of those around you, there is no need to be overlly aggressive or loud on the phone or in person....

Would this crazy lady have freaked out if a friend/associate of yours came by and started a conversation with you or is she purely pissed off on the principle that it's a cell phone!? Obviously she has no common courtesy interupting your phone call in an area where it's perfectly acceptable to talk, be it in person or over the phone as an alternative.

tegGSR
yea i dont like how people who dont go to the UofA come and start shit..i know the corner youre talking about and the noise...i study there late too...thats bullshit..STUDENTS union building for fucks sake.

I was on the 8th floor of the business tower at nait. Its just a hang out... not a library or study hall. So i'm talking to this one girl... and this fat b*tch at another table says "Shut the fuck up, people dont care what you did over the weekend". I was thinking holy sh*t, its not even a study hall. I should've told her to go eat some more since i can hear her talking.... but i'm too nice. I really do regret not telling her to go f*ck herself.
