Some of you know , some of you dont so i will just do a brief summary and hurry this up so we can all get back to our regular things.
I play hockey at high levels, Junior A ( so like Camrose Kodiak level ) not WHL. Anyways im a goalie and i have struggled with injuries and so forth, which caused me to miss out on scholarship opportunities. Last year i had a chance to go play pro in Germany but with the NHL locked out it got shut down real quick, then as i was training for this season i tore my groin.
Anyways i had given up on hockey altogether until the owner of my gym had me come out for his Mens league team, well the team is all ex-junior guys and after a while they started telling me to get more games and go play pro. So anyways i ran into a guy who played Div 1 hockey in France and said its a good league to break into ( its good but not as hard as the DEL - Div 1 german elite league ) Anyways he has an agent and he is hooking me up with a job there next year ( or so i hope )
But the only problem is, a lot of my ice and training is during the day and right now im working as an electrical apprentice and its hard to get time off and so forth and i know that eventually they will either say no or choose. So what im trying to get at is , should i give up my job ( like not stop working but go find a more flexable job ) or just work and hope hockey works out?
Im still young im 20 and really i just love the game of hockey , and want to play it. Whatever your guys responses i wont yell unless its reflux but thats bout it ;) |

Hahah start yelling Sheldon :p
Honestly man, I say go for it.
I remember you made a post a while ago about how you missed chances for taking hockey all the way and you know what...if you think that NOW at the age of 20, what will you be thinking when you're 40 or even 60?
The regret will kill you.
Pursue hockey and if it doesn't work out, then come back and finish up with the electrician bit.
If the chance for the blue collar work is past in BC, come to Alberta where the blue collar boom should still be strong 4-5 years from now.
Then you can be with your fellow 780Tuners and me
What I'm trying to say is this:
The opportunity for hockey doesn't come along all the time.
Whereas the opportunity for becoming an electrician is much more common.
Good luck man! |

Apprenticeships are a dime a dozen. Go for it before you have more responsibility to slow you down. If you love playing hockey, even if it doesn't work out you were doing something you enjoy & at least you know you did your best. Regret burns much deeper & longer than failure.

I was in the same boat as you but when I was 16. I was playing national level rugby for U17 and U19. Both times I was scouted for the international squad. I still have the scout reports to this day. When I turned both down due to finances...my family and myself did not have the resources to fund the camps...the staff gave me a choice, come out for a month to Vancouver and play in an exhibition against 3 US and 1 Mexican teams and we'll take it from there kind of thing. I was 18 then and about 3 days after that, the army called me. I went for the army.
Now I dont regret my choice because I have a pretty good life right now, I'm out of the army but the 8 years I was in weere pretty good, traveled etc etc...My choice was placed on career aspects...I was told by time I was 20 I would be on the senior mens national side. Well we'll never know. Just for shits I went out to ST Albert about 6 years ago and joined there team...I was kicked out of the div4, div3, and the div2 practices...and I was starting on the Div 1 team a couple of weeks later...but the army took over again and only played 1 game. Oh well.
As for your situation, I say do it as well, youre young and the career aspects are in your favor when it comes to hockey. Get the injuries taken care of and see what happens. And dont let a girl keep you back. Its your choice.
Just ask yourself one question and it'll take care of everything else......
WHAT HAVE YOU GOT TO LOSE?
Absolutely nothing.
Do it. |

What REFLUX said. You can always come back to the electrical stuff later. It's not like demand for electricity is gonna die down any time soon.
You only get one chance at life so grab it by the short-and-curlies and give'r hell!

I'm going to go with the group here man. Go for the hockey. There are plenty of leagues over in Europe that have great, high-caliber hockey. I'm sure you know that even these leagues are still scouted by NHL teams and affiliates.
Being 20 you have lots of time to come back and get into the trades if it doesn't work out. Take your shot man, most people don't even get one.
P.S. I'm chasing my dream career. hehe:beer: |
