engine oil again... - Click HERE for Original Thread

bearinalude
sry i know this topic has been discussed many times, but plz take a few moments and shed some light on this newb, i jus found out that my engine is jus about dry!! lol, last oil change was summer, is it normal for the engine oil to decrease? or could my engine be burning oil?? oh yeah and what's the difference between normal oil and synthetic oil?? and what's a good oil for the H23, your help will be much appreciated, thx :)

newaccorddriver
how long have you been driving it without an oil change? ive been driving mine for 5000km or so and it doesnt burn any oil yet. but if youve been driving it for 5000km and its almost bone dry, theres a serious problem

bearinalude
hmm i changed it bout last july, and i've drove for bout 4500km, its got like half a cm on the dipstick, and quite thick

newaccorddriver
it consumed roughly 1L of oil in 4500km, thats alot of oil for the distance it travelled. are you sure theres no leak?

im not too sure why the oil would be 'thick', or what your definition of it would be. it might be the oil your using, but even with the cheapest of all oils in my accord, it never appeared thick, just dirty

bearinalude
hahaha, thick as in like blackish, hehe don't know what kinda oil was used, it was changed at a shop, but i should be putting in mobil 1 this time, how much better is synthetic oil compared to normal ones?? and how much more does it cost?

2ndgenlude
i can burn 1.5-2 litres between changes.
i have h22 though and i am in vtec more often then i should be :)

newaccorddriver
if its blackish, then its just really dirty and should be changed. since a shop did it, it was probably cheap dino oil anyways, so its about time you changed it anyways. not too sure about synthetic oils and stuff, but its supposed to run better in extreme conditions, but i think thats all it does, and it costs ALOT more then conventional oil.

i wouldnt recommend using synthetic oil until you found out why your using(or losing) that much oil. it might just be a leaking gasket, or your rings might be shit, but id find out first before you try synthetic. or even change to a heavier weight of oil, like a 20w-30 to see if it helps a bit with the oil problem

thats alot, but thats what vtec does. an H23 that burns that much isnt good, and theres definetly something wrong with it.

EDIT: i can see why your dad wants to fire you, your posting times should say everything. isnt it about time you get back to work tyler? those trucks arent gonna unload themselves

bearinalude
hehe could H series motor consume a bit more than the accord? well i figure that as the oil vaporizes, it becomes thicker as well and thus causing it to decrease in levels. cuz i don't think it leaks or burns oil, as least i hope so :fingersx:

i dont think oils vaporize in an engines operating temperature. if i were you, id just start up the car and look at the color of the exhaust. if it looks a little blue, your burning oil. if not, id check the oil pan and such for leaks.

my 86 accord doesnt burn oil, but its got a leak on the oil pan which is why i gotta top it off from time to time

Rich_A
for all you H22 guys.. sure sucks when you use too much VTEC hey? I checked my oil last week.. after 3000km's I was 2 litre's low. Lot's of VTEC in that time however ;)

bearinalude
haha ok it definitely isn't blue, but i check the bottom of my car all the time to see if there's leaks, but there's none lol, well i'll bring the car in for a full fluid check and jus keep the engine oil level in check next time to see how much it consumes regularly.

bearinalude
oh yeah, does torque have any relation to consumtion of oil? cuz i've been in redline a couple of times.

:asshole:

take a piece of paper (normal looseleaf)
get someone to hold it by the exhaust and rev it to redline.

if theres oil on the paper theres oil in the cylinder.

bearinalude
hehe okok, will do, thanks fer da help guys:thumbup:

4thGenLude
i go through a litre every 2000k..
so yeh.. gotta get that fixed pretty soon lol

bearinalude
ok the 5w-30 do not specify that it is SH compatible, but it is SJ compatible tho, can i use it?

SJ compatible? i think that just means it meets certain manurfacturer requirements. like how my oil for the BMW must meet 7045E specs(its for AT fluid, but thats just an example, motor oil would be different)

They don't specifically use a special synthetic, but there are very few available in Canada that meet the BMW LL01 oil specification, the ones I know of are:
BMW 5w30 Synthetic (available from BMW dealres, of course!)
Mobil 1 0w40 Synthetic (available from some speciality Auto stores, but I haven't seen it in any big box stores in Canada such as Walmart or Canadian Tire)
Castrol 0w30 European Formula Synthetic (available from Canadian Tire last time I looked)

There may be others, but look for the LL01 approved info on the bottle.

the LL01 is the requirement my BMW needs and the oil has. so SJ is probably some other makers requirements

isnt SH just the trim model?

bearinalude
hehe no, i have a 4th gen, and on the manual it says category SH oil recommended

BananaBoy
I have a 2001 SH and I've used 5w30 moble1 in every olil change so far. I lose about 1 litre every 5000km too.

bearinalude
i'll jus go with the 5w-30 then damnit, hehe thanks for da input guys
