5W30 - is too thin for this application...do you drive a 300zx? |

Absolutely not. VG30DETT's should be using 10W30 as a minimum.
Who are you btw and what do you drive? Not sure if you've had proper introductions to our club yet. |

I'll second that. I have used both... no particular brand loyalty to either one. But Amsoil tends to be more expensive and Mobil 1 is easier to find. |

Partsource carries Amsoil. I use Amsoil in all my cars... Great stuff.
I know some people use Royal Purple and Redline which are also good. I believe they are available at Mopac. |

You haven't specified which Z models you own. We are not a "Z32" club, so one can't assume anything when someone says they own a Z. But this thread topic is specifically addressing Z32s, and even more specifically the Twin Turbo. So what you use in a Z31 or a Z33 (or whatever) is irrelevant to this discussion.
In the service manual, 5W-30 is listed (for temp range -29 C to +16 C), but there is also a disclaimer at the bottom that clearly states "For turbocharger engines, 5W-30 should be used only under extremely cold conditions.".
Anyone that's in the know on Z32s knows that its a generally accepted fact that running 5W-30 in our cars is a no-no.
(Most of us don't drive our 300ZXTT's in the winter btw, including this thread author who asked the question.) |

As a Z32 owner who does drive it in the winter, I have run 5W30 synthetic last winter, and I've driven the car in -30C weather. However, I change out to 10W30 synthetic when the weather warms up, and this "winter", I haven't had to change oil weight at all.
Regular oil changes and good (OEM) filters are key for twin-turbo cars.

| 95 300zx tt running 5w50 syntec for the last five years going to switch back to 5w30 this summer. thanks |

| You should really be using at least 10W30. If you read the owners manual, it clearly says for turbocharged engines, 5W30 should only be used when it is below -20 deg. C. |

Why would you choose to disregard common wisdom? :dunno: I guess you're not obligated to explain yourself but I am curious WHY you would choose to use 5W-30. There is absolutely no good reason to do that, and only possible negatives.
But its your engine... whatever. |

| a 30 weight oil is a 30 weight oil. 5w30 will flow faster on star up and is the same viscosity at operating temperature as 10w30, 20w30 or just 30. |

I just do what the manual says...
5w30 in the winter, 10w30 in the summer.
Although considering this years "winter" 10w30 excluding the other day would probably be suffice. |
