| Hey guys. At my work, the manager is getting rid of a Jetta (not sure on the year but it looks 1990 or lower) From the sounds, looks, and feels the car seems to be in pretty good shape. What I was planning to do was ask the manager what was wrong with it and why their taking it to the car bashers. If it's in good shape, I'm going to run a safety, LOF, and PDI on it then buy it. With a car like this and the managment the way it is, I might even get it for free. I think this a great opportunity for me to take if it's in good shape, what do you guys think? I'm taking it for a spin on monday morning so I can listen for noises and feel for anything unusual. It's a standard and the shifting pattern looks like a "W" pattern (something I've never seen, but then again it's from Germany). Reverse is the complete opposite of were it usually is, it's up by 1st. Thanks guys. |

Seems like an okay idea.... if it's in good running order and won't cost you more than you want to sink into it, then why not (unless it's nothing you want)... Benny has a golf I believe, it's a pretty cool car from the pix, you may want to ask him about some Vdub questions!
Here's my question, how many of us on here have VW's that can offer real good advice on these cars? I don't know many ppl w/ them myself... |

| I don't want to spend too much. If it's got a major problem (for example a blown head gasket) then I won't really bother, but if it's little things like oil leaks or some weird thing then I can handle it. I think it's a good idea considering it'll be my first car and I've never driven a manual before so it'll be good exprience. Thanks for your input :) |

Well, I have an '01 Jetta, but I know nothing about the older ones (which does not imply I know a whole bunch about the newer ones either :D)
You might want to try the forum over on www.airriders.ca. Try the Water Cooled Forum. |

| Take it for a pre-purchase inspection at an independant garage. They will tell you straight up what is wrong with it. You can decide from there if you want to go further with the deal. |

I figure that's the best advice a first time buyer can get from anyone, get it inspected.... oh I also found doing a VIN search at the dmv, uhm I don't recal what they called it, but it searches all registration history, liens, and crash info to let you know if it's been written off... Cost about $20.00 and it was worth it, I found out one of my cars had a lien on it and was able to take care of it w/out getting the car repod or anything like that! |

Little tip, the reverse isn't actually up near first, it's underneath it. I know it's wierd, but that's how VW has been for years. You actually push down on the shifter and it will depress about 1 inch, then you place it pretty much where first gear is. It's a little wierd at first, but it's actually a fairly efficient and reliable selection system.

| Well I can say goodbye to this car. They want $4400. That is WAY too much of what I wanted to pay. I can buy a Civic for that price.....Thanks for the input guys. |
