| how big is the alternator on a Pre89 Mk3 N/A Supra??? |

70 amp.
89+ are 80 amp.
If you are going for a big system then look into a higher amp setup for the car. 110 amps will cost you about $300.

ouch.... yah i think i might have blown a diode in my alternator... my system must be taking up to much power...
i just finished putting my system in...
pioneer premier head unit..
4" rockford power's in front
4" infinity kappa's in rear
6.5" pioneer premiers in rear (ran by small amp)
2 12" alpine type-r subs (ran by rockford amp)
so i am thinking i really should upgrade my alternator...
but i am alittle short on cash flow right now... as i just dished out the remainder of all my funds on importing an mr-2 turbo...
does anyone possible have an extra 80amp alternator i can buy up off of them?? (atleast it will get me by for now, until i can buy a big one) |

Post up on the supraclub site and bump often.....I know we may have a couple on hand in the club but I won't know what they are asking.
Did you price out a rebuit from PartSource. The westend store has:
A brand new one for $250 - $10 core = $240
Or a rebuit one for $280 - $70 core = $210

no i havent really tryed pricing out yet.... my alternator just started to make my volt meter jump alittle and want to cut out my subs.... so i am guessing a diode blew in it....
i don't really want to buy a new one as it will just be temporary..
yah i was going to post on the supraclub forums but i seem to be having nothing but problems lately with logging in....
:dunno:
thanx for the info though  |

Very cool S_D!
I always forget to go to the source for stuff like that. I used to get starters from a place just off street and 34 ave behind what is not the cinema 12 or what ever.
Used to save huge money that way. |

You'll have to remember that when you have an alt re-wound for higher amperage, your idle rating usually drops lower (in some cases, lower than OEM).
If you want higher idle & peak rating, you'll want to buy a High-output purpose built alternator. They usually cost a little bit more, but well worth it IMO if you're big into stereos. |

idle power is better than before on my car. in fact, i fail to see how bigger windings could cause lower idle amperage, should be the opposite. You will never recieve the max amperage at idle though.
As far as i know, there are NO drop in higher amperage alternators for the mk3. if there was, mk2 guys would be using them. only upgrade would be to get the highest stock one. |
