hey guys last night i started my car the same way as always. that seemed fine until i got in it to drive away its an 96 automatic civic. sometimes when i would hit the gas it would rev very high and i wouldnt get much speed out it. then i kept driving thinking it would go away but then it was worse. when i came to a stop and then hit the gas to get going again it would kick in with a great amount of speed with barely any force on the gas. then i decided to go back home and then it wouldnt go over 40kms and it would again rev really high and sometimes when i came to a stop it was hard to get it back up to some actual speed cuz it would just rev high.

any ideas guys?

-low tranny oil.
-fukked tranny oil pump
-broke torque converter
-frozen vent hose/thingy

does it puke oil out of the tranny dipstick when it's warmed up and you pull the dipstick?

getting way out there...
did your rad freeze and kill the tranny cooler that's inside?

bluciv93
well i looked around and didnt notice anything wrong with it except that i tranny fluid was low but i topped it off but the problem wasnt that.

my car still runs so can it be possible that my tranny is fried?
thanks

Man.. with 15 posts.. you shouldn't be even pulling jokes like that.. especially after the tint story I just read...

Anyway.. the idle could be a gummy IACV? and as for no power... I'm not sure.. can you have FULL Throttle and it just bogs? or what.. try giving us a Bit more info.. and we might be able to pin point something?

Best I can do for now..

if i put it into reverse its fine and it has the usual power and the same when i put it into drive it takes off fine until it gets to about 35-40 kms when it should change gear and it doesnt. it just rev's and the car isnt going any faster and then i just have to let my foot off the gas.

what kind of mileage do you have on the car? Have you ever had the trans filter changed? Could be something gumming up the valve body, too....

bluciv93
well i just got back from letting a mechanic check it out and he said i needed a new tranny and quoted me at $1000 for everything icluding parts and labour. thats for an automatic tranny.
does anyone know where i can get it for cheaper?

Soulfly
that Is pretty cheap.. Labour will be like the other $400-$500 of that.. :p

If you can find an Auto Tranny I know a guy that does work on the side... Just PM me if you want his info...

and he Usually does it for cheaper then shops... you can even be there with him and help him out a bit and see how it's all done..

bluciv93
the guy quoted me at 600 for the tranny and 400 for labour so i guess its a pretty hard deal to beat.

gaijin
see if you can find the cause of the failure, too, and maybe not have it happen again? Could have been just a bad tranny, but then again, could be human error, too. But, $1000 for a ntranny installed is not a bad price

bluciv93
i took it to another mechanic and he fiddled around with some stuff and tightened the throttle body and it was working perfectly again. so that saved me a bunch of cash
thanks guys
