auto to manual tranny swap? - Click HERE for Original Thread

bluciv93
does anyone know where i can do an auto to manual swap for cheap?
thanks

newaccorddriver
i hear sumarus is pretty cheap, but you get what you pay for.

bluciv93
what do they charge more or less?

newaccorddriver
its probably less cause my friends 5 speed swap cost roughly $3000 and i think he said $1000 or so was in labor. but they did a really bad job on the swap. PM 2ndgenlude about it

Nightstalker
My method is pretty cheap.. its called selling your shitty automatic and buying a car that was standard to begin with..

X2, but its only if the car is plentiful to start with. if i could find a cheap MKIV supra for cheap and its an auto, id do a 5 speed swap on my own cause the parts are somewhat easy to find. but for something like a civic, just do what Nightstalker said and sell it for one with a manual tranny in it

Nightstalker
Why would you swap a mk4 supra from auto to manual.. the manual tranny in those cars shits the bed once you start making power.. NONE of the current professional drag cars are using manual gear boxes now a days in those cars.

icydude
please dont take it to sumaru's.

you wont see it for ages:(

within lack of comunication(ie them calling us to tell us what parts we need), the few dings extra the car came out with and the 8 month wait it did turn out alright.

i wont get into much detail but mine and others experiences there have been less than satisfactory.

Nightstalker
Plus it would suck to have your car raped for parts because they left it in the yard and someone that likley works there desided they would break in and steal everything off your car.

TrevorK
It can take 8 - 10 hours if ALL of the parts from the doner car are out and ready to go.

That being said, the cost of doing such a swap is usually high enough it's cheaper to sell the automatic and buy the manual.

2ndgenlude
i actually just looked at my bill from sumarus.

i supplied ALL parts out of a donor car, and they told me labour would be $1000. took them approx 2 weks to complete everything. (i kept harrassing them)
they did a crap job though. brackets were not connected, my charcoal canister was hanging by the hose, shift cables were not properly installed, they snapped a month later, and when the tranny finally went the Honda tech i got to do it the 2nd time said they used wrong sizes of bolts, took me under the car and showed me how everything was sitting, etc.

i was more then pissed off.
should have just took it to calgary and got speedtech to do it. that or the dealership.

tegpowered
i can do it, its not cheap. simpler to buy a car with a stick already in it

icydude
midtown in edmonton is also recomended.

i think they go by speedy auto as well.

thats not exactly true, Ryan Woon from WOTM motorsports is using a stock 6 speed getrag (although he uses brand new ones) in his mkIV, and he's in the 8's now...

sorry for the OT, as far as a manual tranny swap, it depends on the car, som are easier than others and it depends how plentiful parts are. as others have said, in some cases it would make more sense to just sell your car and buy one thats already standard.

Nightstalker
Plus there are issues with the tranny motor mount braket when you swap between D and B series engines to make things worse.

Ive done the auto to manual. it doesnt seem to feel like a genuine manual transmission car.

ive done the 5 speed swap to my accord. took a while, but it felt like a manual car though. the only odd thing is seeing the auto cluster cause its got the P D N D4 and stuff on it. other then that i dont see how its any different

2ndgenlude
mine feels like 5spd too. no auto feel haha

you have been PM'd

bluciv93
where did you guys get yours done and how much did you pay?

Charles_00civic
Do you have a 96-00 civic. I'm doing an auto-manual swap soon. We can get it done at the same time. It isnt very hard apparently. Especially on civic's.

tegGSR
isn't it cheaper to sell the car and buy a 5spd in the same car?

whats the advantage to going through all the time and money for this?

Soulfly
depends on the work you've put into it or not...

and sometimes the other car wasn't maintained as well.. Rust issues.. Oil burning/Leaking.. That kinda thing has an impact on it also... :p

9secdream
thats the thing my ive put lots of time into my car and its in good condition so i didnt really want to sell it after all that work.
