Process of buying an out of province car - Click HERE for Original Thread

typer0853
I'm in the process of buying a car and may bring it in from Vancouver. I'm just wondering about the details. I searched but didn't find a clear and detailed process on buying a car from out of province (Vancouver).

Keeping in mind that I would need to go to Vancouver see the car, purchase it, and then drive it back to Edmonton. How and when are things to to be done in terms of getting registration, insurance, inspections, etc.

I'm hoping to demystify the process, and then create a detailed procedure, which may be of value to sticky in the buy/sell cars section of this forum.

Thanks
David

well, you just go to any dealership you would like to buy a car from. pay them for it,, and then go straight to ICBC for temporary insurance(they also province you with a stupid looking computer printed 'plate number'). it shouldnt cost too much as my dad got temporary insurance for my BMW for a week for around $100 or so. and once you get it back home, you get the out of province inspection done so you can register/insure the car. i believe my BMW got insurance before i got the out of province though.

ya, i got insurance on my prelude before the out of province.
the test is extensive though.

just buy the car, drive it back. get the inspection. take the passed inspection to registry, along with bill of sale, etc. and your done :)

just bought a corvette on friday from van...

bring an alberta plate, any valid plate cause you have 2 weeks to change it... call you insurance company tell them to add the new car on. fly there buy the car put your plate on drive home

icbc will meet you at the dealership when you buy if its a private sale just drive home

bc has alot of ????? rules but the nice thing, you get an aircare report so you can see how well it runs

ya i got aircare with my car. its funny all the shit they give you.

One thing...not any valid Alta plate will do. If you still own the vehicle that the plate came off of, that is not legal. You have to have sold the vehicle that the plate came off of, then you have the 14 days to transfer over the plate to the new vehicle.

I bought a car from abbotsford (private sale) a few years ago.

-I called my insurance company ahead of time and told them what I was doing. They said to fax them the bill of sale once I buy the car.
-I flew to abbotsford, met the guy, checked out the car and bought it
-we took the paper work to an ICBC office. I faxed the bill of sale to my insurance company, they faxed back a temporary insurance card
-I bought temporary registration from ICBC, (it wasnt very expensive at all, like 40 or 50 bucks for 4 days) they game me a paper plate to tape in my back window.
-I drove home, had an out of province inspection done and took the sheet over to the alberta registries office with my insurance card and they game me registration and a new plate.

So there is what I did to bring a car over. Doing it this way there will be no question if the car has legal insurance or registration, you will be covered.

Just a stupid detail, but you need to get a request for out of province inspection before a garage can do the inspection (or at least before they can fill out the green pass form)

Anyone know of any shops that do out of province inspections that arent crooks? I took my stealth that I bought in ontario to a shop here on the north end and they went on and on about all this stuff I need that I already replaced right before I brought it to them.(Ball joints, rotors, and wheel bearings were a few that they mentioned) i went home and grabbed the recipts for the work and refused to pay them for the inspection but they still would not pass it.

id recommend tirecraft on 97st/130ave. i used to work there and i took my BMW to there to get it inspected. the guy that inspects it isnt crooked at all, and their not in there to sell you anything really.

Access Automotive on 170st right by the truck stop at yellowhead. They are a small shop but have excellent customer service and they wont rip you off.
