What's a good Radar Detector? - Click HERE for Original Thread

mr2kid88
Hey,

Does anyone know the best radar detector i can get, with the most features, such as jamming etc. that is legal in alberta?

I dont care about price...tonite i was caught doing 91 in a 60, so i owe the cops coincidentally, $187

plus I might be getting a red light ticket here sooner or later..

It was the same guy who pulled me for DUI suspicion a few months back..Is hand held radar fightable in court?

also, has anyone tried this, and is it legal?

license plate spray

thanks,
dan

As most will say try not to speed, but as for the radar detector I would say the best would be the passport 8500 x50. Thing is that chances are that if it was in the city with a cop car on the side of the road you are being hit by laser which won't be picked up by any radar detector untill you have already been hit and they have your speed.

As for the fighting the speeding ticket not really worth it but if you have a good driving record you can go in and ask to have it reduced but you would be better off having a court agent doing it for you they usually have a bit better luck with it. This will get the demerits off the tickets but won't be cheap.
hope that helped

flatboy
I got a passport 8500, but I know there is some newer tech. as my 8500 is like 4 years old. Don't speed.

ummm, no detector can help you with this one... that's all you

nissanz32
Buy a valentine V1 and have it hardwired into your car.

dc2696
I have an escort 8500x50:thumbup: only ticket I've ever gotten for speeding was when I didn't have it in my truck, but I don't speed as much now.

myhorse
From a pure product perspective, I swear by the valentine
But....almost pointless in the city. They use Laser and laser is instant

V1 - are great on the highway ( where they use radar ) because they pick up earlier and yopu can tell which direction is coming from.

But again...they can get you with laser and by airplane

Just as a note, and with all due respect, with the amount of suspected driving violations you mentioned ( implying there could be more not mentioned ) maybe you should reconsider your driving strategy???

:dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

energie
v1 or escort 8500 x50. i have the x50 hardwired in my car, works well.

mr2kid88
thanks guys,

'my horse',

as for my driving strategy, that should be my first red light one, I was just totally not payin attention on jasper ave..but it wasnt in the mail today :D (and it happened last thursday)

also, u say the valentine is good on the highway, can the passport do that too?

and where could I get these products guys, radio shack?

thanks again..
speeder

myhorse
the Valentine picks up far earlier than the escort and passport

www.valentine1.com

and as I say knowing where the radar is is just as important as getting it early.
I had the 8500 and it was good, just that the V1 is better.

does it really matter that much for your ferrari? i drove behind you and switched lanes and noticed you use the anti-radar plate blocker:rolleyes: althought i think i get your point though

Anti photo plate...the guy that sold it to me told me it was a magnifying glass. I was trying to help the guys in the photobuggy out by making my plate bigger and easier to read

sparkycivic
there is hope for beating laser: remember the signal has to be bounced back and received by the operator, so that means he has to get a fairly strong beam onto the car that will reflect back. they don't always manage to get good reflections off a dirty car or one that has no front plate, etc so a detector will go off before you are in range, plus they need to take 3 good measurements to determine your range, speed, and verification, but you'll only need one to set off the detector. My cheapass Cobra 9-band saved me a few times, by alerting me so I could slam the binders and knock off lots of K's that would have otherwise been on the ticket.
their beam is like 10 feet accross by the time it gets to your car at a distance of 2 blocks, so there's no worries of the beams missing the detector.
keep this in mind when you're driving with your new detector, and up to no-good.

I'm actually a more respectable driver because of my detector... because im always being reminded that I'm being watched, so I drive slower now. It's soo much cheaper than getting the reminders in the mail

anyone that tells you that one detector is better than another, is a fanboy of that product...the v1 and passport X50 are both on par with each other...do you really need arrows to tell you where the radar is? or do you just need to know when to slow the fuck down? the arrows on the v1 is useless in my mind. so that would make the two detectors 99.5% the same.

I would go with the passport. (only because it looks way better)

as for the photo blocker stuff...works like a charm for me.

photo blocker

myhorse
spray the photo blocker all over your car. That should make it invisible or at least blurry to radar shouldn;t it???

:dunno:

BTW the v1 can track upto 4 signals simultaneously. So if you think you've passed the cop and his buddy is waiting ahead under the next over pass, the valentine will warm you about both.

They do this all the time on hwy 2 or QEII or what the hell that highway from edmonton to calgary is called

mr2kid88
thanks guys..

where would u suggest the best place to pick up a valentine? (for how much$$)

and 300zx,

where did u get the plate cover and what is its purpose? and does your plate sparkle in any lighting conditions, or it looks normal day/night?

dan

mr2kid88
btw, anyone heard of this?

The purpose of the cover was so that the spray wouldn't wash off when the car got wet. (before I used the permanent spray i had one that came off when wet) now I use the permanent spray. nope the palte doesn't sparkle under any lights. looks 100% normal:thumbup:

for the V1 I would use ebay, before you shell out extra cash for the arrows. please do your research on both detectors first.

As myhorse said, Valentine One owns all the other detectors. I don't have one yet, but my uncle has one in his Porsche and it was very handy to see it in action (not that I was driving his Boxster absurdly fast)... it's getting my money for sure, and I can wire the display into the rearview mirror in the NSX.

I was almost sure the passport does this too? :dunno:

Since you hang with all the exotic car guys, do you have any buddies or yourself that use laser jammers? I was looking into a good laser jammer for my car.

Tech2
This guy I know with his sc400 swears by his laser jammer. Everythings wired and he gets to watch cops try to figure out why their gun doesn't work one second by works just fine the next.

He keeps telling me to get one too. One day I will...

Buy my Talon :p

Valentine 1 and main reason beside the fact its great is because you can turn it back in when they get new techonology and only pay like 100 bucks more for the new stuff.

In the end radar is bigger on the high ways but like myhorse said they can get you with planes, my dad got a really nasty ticket when he was younger from a plane catchin him while he was steppin on it to get away from a cop that was on a side road.

Best thing is to rethink what your doing, get a radar detector for the long trips were 100km/hr is frustratin when you got another 10 hours to go and you want to make it just that bit shorter

 Yeah, I know you'd never trade. I'll post pics when I pick up the 'X, don't worry. And no, it isn't getting winter driven, so I'm gonna need a winter beater (might get an Eagle 2000 GTX or something)...

mr2kid88
i know radar detectors are legal, but whats the fine for a jammer??

I think the escort can "watch" more than 4 signals at once...8 actually, but like I said before the escort owns the v1..hands down:eek:
