What is Wrong with Edmonton Drivers??? - Click HERE for Original Thread

GOT BOOST
Hi Everyone,

This is a rant. It makes me somewhat upset to post this but I feel it needs to be done. I simply do not understand what is wrong with the drivers in Edmonton. It is beyond my comprehension.

Today I was at a funeral for a friend of the family. The service had ended and the funeral procession to the cemetary was under way. There were 25 vehicles in the procession. EVERYONE had their 4 way flashers and headlights on. There was a Black Cadalliac in the lead, followed by the hurst. During our 10 min drive to the cemetary, our procession was cut into 5 times, and people in the procession (including myself) were almost slammed into 8 times by drivers who were too impatient to wait for the procession to clear the intersection. At one point one vehicle cut infront of another vehicle in the procession and almost ran into the back of them.

These drivers watched the saw the Hurst travel through the intersection followed by a flock of cars in the procession, yet when the light turns green for them, they purposely floor it and try to T-Bone cars in the line. One driver even went as far as to hold his hand down on his horn, shout at us and give us the finger. Seriously man. Give your head a shake and look at what you are doing.

I am happy to say that there were a few cars that did take note and allow at one point what was left of our procession to continue on. In then end everyone eventually did meet up.

I am just baffled by the compete ignorance of many drivers that would:

A) Purposefully and intentionally cut off vehicles in a procession.
B) Purposefully and intentionally try to ram vehicles in a procession.

This is why I firmly believe people should undergo psychiatric evaluations before they receive their license and every few years after. I would be willing to chime in for a program like that.

End of rant.

Ha, move to Saskatoon then complain about Edmonton drivers.

TrevorK
I'm curious - is it out of courteous to yield to a procession or is there actually a law stating such?

There is a law stating you can't disturb a procession...

kyuu
People like that are why the last time I was part of a funeral procession we had police escorts

Hi TrevorK,

I think one needs yield due to a law. I seem to recall reading that in the Drivers Learning manual. I will stop by a registries later and pick one up.

I have been in a few funeral processions in the past and the Hurst has always traveled through a Red light after stopping and proceding when it is safe and everyone has stopped.

I will post back when I have some more info unless anyone on here knows for certain.

Rich_A, I have travelled on the roads many of times in Saskatoon and have not viewed 1/8 of the amount of stuff there as I have viewed here.

It's because we have 1/8th of the population lol (not quite but you get it). People aren't crazy here but they sure are rude and rather aggressive on the road.

Hi TrevorK,

Here are the rules inregards to this. http://www.qp.gov.ab.ca/documents/R...isbn=0779717082

And I quote "Processions and parades

88(1) A person driving a vehicle shall not drive the vehicle so as to cause the vehicle to

(a) break through the ranks of a military or funeral procession, or

(b) break through the ranks of any other authorized parade or procession.

(2) Notwithstanding sections 34, 36 to 40, 53 and 54, in the case of a highway in an urban area where a municipal bylaw permits it, a person driving a vehicle in a funeral procession, other than the lead vehicle in the funeral procession, may, during daytime hours, drive the vehicle into an intersection without stopping the vehicle if

(a) the vehicle’s headlamps and hazard warning lamps are alight,

(b) the vehicle is travelling immediately behind the vehicle in front of it in the funeral procession so as to form a continuous line of traffic,

(c) the lead vehicle in the funeral procession is showing a purple flashing light, and

(d) the passage into the intersection can be made in safety"

Found the link to this here. http://forums.780tuners.com/showthr...;threadid=16949

Thanks to Terry for posting that up and Alberta RC for providing the links.

Before it was provided for free. I believe now, you want the presence, you have to pay for them to be there.

Not sure wha the going rates are these days.

Need I say more? If people actually read the book, they'd know this stuff. Then again, it should be common curtesy.

I always remember back in sask for funerals all the old people would stop on the road while you went by.......even if it was oppisite directions to show respect.

n0c7
Yes its a law and that is horribly desrepectful. I wonder how they would like it if it was their friend laying in that box and you cut them off. They'll get their due someday Mike.

RS13
I feel sorry for you and the funeral. But last summer i saw a procession with a police escort (motorbikes and cars) and people still tried to cut them off. Ahhh the drama.

Of course not.

But let's be fair to all sides - the funeral homes shouldn't force a long procession of cars down a busy street during rush hour either. I've seen 97st blocked off while the one funeral home decided to let the procession start during rush hour. Traffic was backed up all the way to the downtown end of 97th street.

How about you ask Mike if it was at rush hour before you try and spread the blame around. :dunno:

Hi Nate,

Good catch on that one. :D

TrevorK,

I agree with your statement. A procession should not be during rush hour traffic on high volume roads. This procession started about 2:00pm. The service was at 1:00pm.

Snugs,

It is just one of those things that when you think you have watched it all, you get hit with this. To be upfront this did suprise me. I thought people still held respect for funeral processions. Now knowing this, I know that nothing will suprise me in the future.

I can understand accidentally cutting into a procession due to not paying attention or someone in the procession was nice and let them break it to get accross. To me that is an accceptalbe error, that happens. But to willingly force your way into one or to willingly break through the line at an intersection is another.

I do know that what goes around eventually comes around and it will come back to these people.

Just my thoughts

Mike Nikolai

lilweiner
i'm going to throw my idea at this.... Mike I'm sorry to hear about people being such assholes, but i think what it has come down to, is people dont really give a fuck. Plain and simple, i think alot of people are missing some compassion and empathy. People now, today, worship money, they dont really care about much else, so in thier minds, i think what they are thinking is; WTF, why should i have to be late for work or late for something or miss out on some money, or a sale, because of a funeral procession, life goes on, even after your gone. Thats not the way i feel about it, and frankly its a real dissapointment, you'd think as far as we have come as human beings, Mechanically that is, that some of that advancement would have brushed off on our feeling towards other human beings. but that is something that will never be a reality. Truth be told, it is what it is, tryin to make the most $$$$ per second while you are on this planet. At least thats what WE have turned it into. Thats why i think people could really careless, cause whats really really fucked up, is i see people waiting 20 min to get a coffee from timmy hoe's.... but cant wait 5 min for a fucking procession.. but on the flip side of that, thats thier choice to waste 20 min of thier life, getting thier coffee. I aint sayin' its right aint sayin its wrong, i'm just sayin. ..... did everyone kina understand that.... cause its a lil confusing.

If only it was just unchanging. The truth is, as far as we advance technologically, we regress emotionally. It's a nice thought, eh? Our lives get easier and easier, and we get uglier and uglier.

how bout you fuck off, just cause we have alot of shitty disrespectful drivers, does not in anyway mean we are all shitty drivers.

and the comment of "uneducated scum", how about you get your pompous head out of your ass and take a look at our education system, and post secondary system.

Edmonton has some of the smartest and world renown doctors, physicists and engineers. Next time you want to make a comment about your country you should do some fucking research.

Hi Lilwiener,

I would agree with that statement as I know what you are trying to convey. Yes, you are correct. At the end of the day life does go on.

Oldraven,

We do live in an instant now. People for the most part expect to have something done 5 min ago. It is amusing to watch people get upset in a line up at Mc Donalds when they have been waiting in line for no more than 1 min.

TrevorK,

No worries. I picked up that it was a general statement but it could also be viewed as a specific one. It takes alot to offend me. Trust me! :D

BlackSRT4, That is an interesting statement you make. I am curious to view the research and stats you have to back this up.

Malaria, I agree with your general assessment of the situation. Certian demographics will yield different results.

Lets try and keep this thread respectfull. I do not want to see it go up in flames and locked down. :D

Hey Mike,
Sorry to hear about your grief.

Ever since the city earned the label "worst drivers in Canada" Edmontonians have been on a rampage of traffic violations.

I am sure when that information was released most who read it said "It's not me?", so as a result we all figure there are many people out there worse than us so we do not need to try so hard. The result is that all drives will slide down the scale a bit because of it.

It would be like saying Edmonton high school students are the smartest in Canada...Enrolment in Universities and Colleges would be way up because the expectations and at the same time if you said Toronto high school students are the dumbest then as a result the trades & manufacturing would see a rise in workers.

Most people will take the word of others before they will decide for themselves where they fit in.

Hi arabian_ryda,

Although it is a good idea, out of respect to the family, I would wish this issue to not be brought up as or in a news story.

I do agree with what you are saying. It would reach alot of people however I need to consider both sides of the coin on this issue.

As I understand it, the difference is:

Calgary drivers are insane but marginally more competent
Edmonton drivers are incompetent.

Of course, this is speaking about the "average", so this doesn't reflect my opinions of anyone posting here.

My friend from Calgary unintentionally summed it up:
"WHAT'S WRONG WITH EVERYONE HERE!!! THEY'RE ONLY 20 OVER!!!" on the hill down to Groat.

Dunno why this works out to lower insurance, though.

Honda_Finatic
in response to "whats wrong with edmonton drivers?", i kid u all not... for the last month or 2, EVERY FRIDAY... i get at least one f*ckwad that does the 'lane-change without looking' bullsh*t on me when i am beside them. About 3 Fridays ago, i had 4 vehicles do it to me throughout the day. WTF?!

I'm already expecting it to happen to me again tommorow.
