| just curious, I have a 2002 silver WRX. If I get a K&N high flow filter with a Apexi car back exhust system. How much performence gain will I get from this?<p>anyone? |

| Better spoolup too, easier to get into boost.<p>I dont think the intake will make much difference. |
| REFLUX |
i doubt it would affect spool up significantly
the cat back exhaust would help with flow capacity (AKA backpressure but more "technically correct")
but dont expect the turbo to spool up at 3000RPM
speakin of RPM, doesn't the WRX spool @ 4000? |
| Alpha Gangsta |
how big is the turbo on those?
On my old turbo I could start spooling at 2000 but when I upgraded to a larger one its at 3000.
My old garret turbo was so small I could set off my blow off vavle while at a red light reving my engine. |
| smooth |
| Reflux, what do you think causes spoolup? Backpressure! I don't know where you're getting your info but its not good. And why wouldn't you expect the turbo to spool up by 3000rpm? Its all based on the turbo sizing. |
| REFLUX |
smooth: you want less backpressure in the exhaust system
so in other words you want a more free flowing exhaust so there is a greater pressure difference
with the increased pressure diff, gases flow from high to low pressure
so if there is low pressure on the exhaust side, the gases from the manifold will flow faster because of the pressure difference
but if pressure is the same before and after the turbo the flow of gas will be little to nil
you're prbly thinkin something similar to wat i'm saying, but all i'm saying is if you use the term BACKPRESSURE it sounds like there is "pressure going backwards from exhaust to engine"
that isn't wanted because then there would be no pressure difference before & after the turbo<p>hope that makes sense
& if i'm still wrong, correct me cuz i'm pretty sure wat i said is right |
| REFLUX |
also about turbo sizing, i agree that the size of the turbo makes one helluva difference in spool up time
but i dont think adding a catback exhaust system to a 2002 WRX will make the STOCK turbo spool up 1000RPM sooner |
| smooth |
| I think we're talking the same thing, but I guess I need to know what your definition of spoolup is. _To me spoolup is when do you see boost, as in the ammount of lag. _<p>Factory exhausts are notoriously known to be undersized and restrictive. I would expect a noticeable increase in difference in spoolup. |
| Loose |
| It's all about the down pipe, and eliminating the cat before the turbo. Do the whole exhaust at once.<p>Better yet, go buy Sport Compact Car (leaving the news stands now) and git yo-sef some edumucation. |

| Cat before the turbo? <p>You're kidding right? |
| dsm4ever |
| No he is not. Ive heard that those wrx's have freakin 3 cats in them. I before the turbo, 1 just after, and one where regular cats go. Ive heard up wrx's in the states with a full 3 inche exhaust(no cats) and a boost controller running mid 13's. The needed to meet emmisions and thats how they did it |
| REFLUX |
Smooth: Noticeable difference in spoolup yes, but dramatic I don't think so.
You may see a few hundred RPM difference, but not 1000.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see if SilverRex gets the exhaust installed or not.<p>& What dsm4ever & Loose said is true, many many cats. Orgy style |
| Loose |
| From experience with my car, and those belonging to my friends, I'm guessing most downpipes reduce the boost threshold by 500rpm, and increase spool up time (once it starts). The biggest difference you feel is in the low end torque.<p>BTW, if your goal is to be environmentally friendly, a down pipe is not for you. |
| smooth |
| SO what's the purpose of puttting a cat behind the turbo? That would hamper exhaust velocity.<p>If you're going to put 3 in, why not after the turbo? |
| dsm4ever |
| Subaru put in 1 cat before and i think 2 cats after the turbo. Yes it would hinder performance a lot, but to meet emissions, they had to. Take out all cats, and put a 3inche turbo-back exhaust on it. You will notice the difference by at least 500 rpm. |
| smooth |
| So any reason why they put one before the turbo? |
| REFLUX |
I spoke to one of the lead designers of the WRX this morning over the phone. I was wondering about the cats as well so i asked him, he told me:
"You know that lil bitch on Asianet SMOOTH?? Yea that lil piss-off is the reason why i put in 3 cats, so he'll think twice before he buys a car that i make!"<p>so i guess that's that<p>Sorry smooth, i only speak the truth (even tho it's from my ass) haha |

I'm not too familiar with the Scooby but the premise of putting 3 cats is to effectively control the emissions. _Turbo cars or any high performance cars, let's just say, _put out a lot more pollutants....<p>having the precat before the Turbo probably enabled it to get it through the sniffers for US market consumption. _If you want serious performance, you'd better think of all possible ways to reduce exhaust restrictions as well as opening up the intake too.<p>This in my eyes would constitute removing ALL the cats, getting an Apex-i filter (proven to flow best on highly modded Skyline R34) _Some bad ass exhaust and dial up the boost some. _I would probably go with LINK. _Stuff a wideband O2 to monitor the AF and tune it on the street.....unless you got access to a 4wheel dyno and or the means to disconnect the AWD yoke.<p>Some local Scoobies here, are already putting the smack down on some bigger and badder cars like S/C Stangs and some high NOS app. _The AWD launch off the line is phenomenal.....<p>

[/b][/quote]<p>Another Alberta Advantage, no emissions testing for us, the government secretly loves us go fast freaks because we keep the petrol flowing out of the pumps and in turn the oil flowing out of the ground, meaning more revenue for them. |
