My friend told me that there was a place in downtown edmonton that you could go, to get paid to go to school for trades. I can't seem to find it online, and he can't remember the name of the organization that does this.
Has anyone on here heard of this, or know more about it? I wold like to go to school for a trade, but I can't put my entire life on hold just to take school, especially with a new family. I've grown tired of 'working jobs that have no future', and i want to get into an actual career. I would need to get sponsored so that i can pay my billz while taking school, and then go to work making what I am really worth. |

well, if you take a trade and your in an apprenticeship, chances are the company would pay for your tuition. and while your going to school, you can also be on EI(or so im told).
sometimes a company would sponsor you for an apprenticeship, but you gotta pay for the tuition on your own, its not usually too costly anyways, maybe $1000 or so a year. half the time they reimburse you the tuition IF you manage to pass the year. atleast thats how PTI works
im just 18 and i dont have a family or anything to support other then myself, so it might be a bit harder for you do start off on something new and go to school as well. good luck on it though:thumbup: |

* There are approximately 165 annual awards of $1000 each for apprenticeship and occupational training programs.
* Most apprentices are eligible for employment insurance (EI) while attending technical training.
* Based on need, financial assistance may be available to apprentices while attending technical training.

| you get ui when going to school but they only cover 6 out of the 8 weeks and you probably wont see your first check for a month or so. if you have any dependants chances are you can get a government grant to help out with the time your in school i know because a buddy i work with took a grant every year of shcooling |

uhhh dude, yea you can lol. EVERYONE at my tradeschool went to EI when they went to school. You are unemployed when you go to school. You cant apply until your officially off the job and in school so your money doesnt usually get to you until your almost done school so it doesnt really help. But if you take out a loan to pay the bills then you can pay it back when you get your EI cheques. and then by then your back at work making money again. only now you make more since your done school. |

none of this sounds like what he was telling me...
he made it sound like the government was willing to pay my billz for me so that I could go to school and fill jobs here in the oilfield construction and shit like that where they dont' want foreigners filling. well, either the government, or some other interested entity. ill ask him again.
also I was under the impression that the only way to get on EI is if you get laid-off from work. I am currently employed and although i'd love to tell the boss where to stick it(i almost did friday, lucky for him i didn't) he'd have to lay me off for me to get on the bandwagon. |

| You need to get endentured first ( signed up for a trade). Once your signed up and have your blue book you are now a 1st year. You ar enow making 50 or 60% depending on what trade. You have to work for 1500 hours to qualify for school, although I have yet to be asked for my hours in three years. Then you have to register with a technical school. It can be nait or sait or who ever. When it comes time for you to go to school, your employer will "lay you off for schooling". The goverment knows why your off work. They give you yor record of employment and you have to sign up for a special EI, it's ment for students. If this is your first time, as it looks it is. You have to wait an extra two weeks for your first cheq. So you might see the first bit of money maybe in week 5 out of 8 weeks of school. The best way to make it through is to have some money saved up or get a loan. There are some grants you can get, I think they might be on the trades secret website. Either way trades are the way to go. |

i dont get it. why would the government give out grants and stuff for people to go to school just so foreigners dont fill the positions? their going to have to find a job, let it be at mcdonalds or at the rigs, their going to have to pay taxes no matter what. eventually the money recirculates into the economy anyways. i can see the government assisting people that cant afford to go to school and support themselves at the same time(but thats what student loans are for anyways), but not just so foreigners dont fill the spots |

there are grants for trades but you dont just get them for nothing. usually there are circumstances you have to meet before they give them to you. all you have to do is apply. |
