Junkyard turbo? - Click HERE for Original Thread

OJ
If I wanted to build up a junkyard turbo for a 92 civic hatchback, what would be a good donor JY turbo? What parts would I need, I'd like it intercooled too.

Unsure
Its not going to be cheap.. _First off, do you know your basics about turbo charging a Honda?
You need:
Turbo
Ex Manifold (custom job or off a turbo kit or you can try using the Ex mani from a USDM HF motor)
Downpipe (that will probably be a custom job)
Charge pipe, BOV, Intercooler
I'm leaving off the fuel/fuel management stuff because there are many different ways to go there.
It all depends on your goals, budget restraints.
My advice to you.. a turbo is not something you just go and buy and strap on like a filter on a stick. Do your research, set realistic goals, then plan it out and do it.

Unsure!!!! Welcome to AN... it will be nice having you around here for the tech talk.

Providing you know what it take to add a turbo, and all the stuff that Unsure has posted, you could consider the Chrysler watercooled TDO4. They are a nice size for the civic, and are plentiful and cheap as all heck.
As for intercoolers, I like the look and flow of the Starion, but they are getting harder to find in good shape.
It's tough to escape the costs of proper fuel and timing management, but with some luck you can pick up some used parts off the net.

Go to Chapter's and pick up HCI magazine. They did a junkyard turbo mod on a Del Sol I believe. The turbo came from an SVO Mustang.....

Thanks for the posts guys. How hard would it be to modify the existing stock header into a manifold? How efficient (inefficient) would it be?
I am considering purchasing a J&S Knock sensor for timing and a Vortech FMU for fuel.

Unsure
Hey GirlRacer!
OJ: If you're a good welder, welding a flange to Cast can be done. Since I'm not a welder, I'd go with a either a custom Ex Manifold or fab an adapter plate and use the HF manifold. (you can get them for as cheap as 15 US)
As for FMU, they work fine if you don't plan on going more than 10 psi... and even that is pushing it. IMO, FMU's don't give enough tunability but it will get the job done.

reno
A FMU is going to run really high fuel pressures (>80psi). Best make sure your fuel lines, clamps, and pump can support those pressures.

Unsure
Ya good point reno. Thats another thing I forgot to mention. You can get different disks that will index the boost to different pressures. Make sure when choosing the fuel hoses you take into account the max amount of pressure your hoses will see. Usually, a 8psi disk (running 7psi boost)will need at least 100psi hose.
