Like it says, I am peicing together a CPU and need Windows XP (preferably home edition) to install on her to get it going. Let me know if you got it sitting around or can get me a sweet hook up!
Thanks

Also interested in cheap'ish flatscreen monitor.

Get Pro instead of home. Home is just a watered down Pro, it's completely pointless to get Home instead of Pro.

watered down pro? are you referring to the fact that there is basically no difference minus home not having IIS and a couple minor things that unless you are a programmer or very picky about detailed security in your system?

The only diff I see is that home is cheaper than pro and I would recommend home to any basic home or business user.

As you can see their is a few more differences then just IIS and a couple minor things for programmers.

sorry to break it to ya jordan, but us non-supernerds dont know what any of that stuff means :dunno:

For most people home is enough. Pro has more enterprise networking features. The only reason why there is a home is cause bill gates is a gready bastard.

...read through that again...differences in IIS and security features, exactly what I said.

The basic user does not need more than xp home, that's just my opinion and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I've used Remote Desktop quite a few times.:dunno:

I don't think there is a substantial price difference in XP Home/Pro (Well to be fair I have never bought either...) so personally I would just get Pro. It probably isn't needed to the everyday user though.

That would be about the only reason for a regular user to use pro. Remote Desktop. I have pro on my laptop cause well, I have a domain at home. And I use Terminal services alot.. oh wait, I'm using it right now :P but thats Win2K server

if you buy from a store xp home is something like 149 for the full version...xp pro is like 399 for full. If the price wasn't a substantial difference I wouldn't have even stated anything in this thread.

Oh I didn't know the price. I thought they would be fairly close to the same but I guess not. As I said I've never bought either.

Maybe it also has to do with my personality, but I don't want a watered down version, I want to be able to use all the features.

As for the original topic, use the link I posted, if you need those capabilities go for Pro, if not just get Home I guess.:dunno:

OEM, sometime home can be had for $105, but $130 is average. Pro 32bit os about $170 OEM.

With OEM you're supposed to buy it with a system. but Microsoft has specified that a OEM licence is tied to the motherboard.
