Can you get high compression rotors for RX-7s? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Fish_e_o
can you get migh compession pistons or.. triangles for them..

it's just one of those things i think about when i'm driving down the road...

or if someone knows a good site i'd like to check it out...

Pistons in a RX7 eh? Wow...

Yes & No, you can get stock rotors for RX-7s from Mazda that have a higher compression than what you may be running, depending on which model & whether or not it's a turbo on NA. What most people do if they have a turbo model is they switch to the NA rotors. Some of the rotor compression specs are below:

9.7 - n/a s5 (89-91)
9.0 - TII s5 (89-91) & 9.54 lbs
9.4 - n/a s4 (86-88)
8.5 - TII s4 (87-88) & 10.04 lbs
9.0 - FDs (93-95) & 9.54 lbs
10.0 - RX-8 <---- not easily interchanged

...... i know.......

I always thought that the series5 rotors had higher compression and that they'd switch to series 4 rotors for the lower compression to boost safely at high boost?

That is correct, but they do weigh more. Some people have actually machined the rotor "tubs" to change the compression to exactly what they want, very expensive & tricky to do. It's more common to get rotors lightened, which a few companies do. There is a couple companies that will make new rotors, but it's very cost prohibitive as well.

I was considering switching to s5 N/A rotors, but everyone I talked to was completely underwhelmed by the performance gain, especially considering the stock turbo engines already recommended premium & therefore would need to by a barrel of high-octane gas & mix it to prevent detonation, which means death to a rotary engine. www.rx7club.com is a really good source for info.

thats what i was looking for!!

thanks for the site, i might be picking up one with a blown motor and seeing what i can do with it.. just for fun:D

but still keeping the neon as a special car and the rx7 would be a daily driver (probably a bad idea..:D )

It should be the other way around; the neon being the daily and the rx7 being your special car.

no the neon is to fast and touchy as a daily driver...

rx7 would be good except that they aren't reliable...

we'll see it's still up for debate... i'll probably get another neon just because i have all the extra parts for it..

honestly want compression outta them. Then put in a sbc or ls1 engine. I am running 11-1 compression on my 388 sbc stroker this summer and my buddy with a 355 sbc will be running roughly 10-1 compression on his.

you're clearly not talking about an rx7.. right???

o yes I am my friend. No replacement for displacement. Honestly the RX-7 with a V8 swap is the poors mans super car dude. I have put into it about $5500 and I only have some small stuff left to buy. And I mean I didn't cheap out on stuff either.

tranny with a 2600-2800 stall (700r4), bottom end built to my 388 stroker, my edlebrocker preformer RPM air gap intake, msd pro billet distributors, msd 2 step module, msd blaster 2 ignition coils, Holley 770 cfm street avenger carb, B&M magnum grip pro stick shifter and 4 speed plate for it also, black chevy valve covers, nitrous kit (NOS sniper kit), battery relocation kit, breaded hoses and fittings for my fuel line and pick up, autometer phantom series tach and gauges, and my heads will be takin into get the heads ported BIG TIME and probably put on 2.05, 1.60 valves on my Vortec heads that will flow 255 cfm, and my 1.6 rocker arms.

And I will break into the 11's mid hopefully off motor, and I should break into the high 10's with my 150 shot of nitrous oxide. Well I hope for the 10's atleast.

well then if you want to get technical it's not really "for" an rx7 it's just in an rx7 :D

sounds like a good build, i used to be really into muscle cars and big v8's (my first car was almost a chrysler 300 WITH A 440!!)... but i grew out of it when i got my neon and learned to love the turns as much if not more than the strait line.

i guess you can put a v8 in anything and it's a poor mans super car eh??:D

American Rice
that the best part also about the rex, is that you still have great and I mean great handling on these cars, because all it takes is a few little things and you still have prefect 50/50 weight distribution on them. Thats why it is called the poor mans super car, is because you get al the great benefits of a light car that is amazing in the 1/4mile and still can out handle most cars on the road.

Wookey
when my motor blows i will have to seriously think about puttin an LS1 in my car. It just seems too easy for the power gains, reliability factor and readily available parts.

no to easy would be a 350!!!:D

American Rice
There is ALOT to droppin in a LS1 engine, thats why I just went old school with the 388 stroker. And plus I love the old school lumpy a$$ cam sound so. But ya just gutting it out and putting in a sbc is ALOT of power and very reliable also.
